"Cash Crop" . . . They couldn't have made any money on this movie!

The Bottom Line: Just like it says . . . Avoid it! Not even seeing James Van der Beek is worth the torture of watching this movie!

“Cash Crop” – R

One small town tries to survive their slow harvest season by growing and selling pot.

The Story:
In a small farming town, the farmers are struggling. The banks are willing to buy the farms, but the townspeople refuse to sell. They are trying to keep ahead of the game by growing marijuana and then selling it. This is keeping them from having to sell their land. But a Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) (Mary McCormack) comes into town to find out who is selling drugs. She teams up with the local sheriff (John Slattery) to weed out the growers. The sheriff does not believe the townspeople are growing marijuana, but he helps the DEA officer to look and interview people.

One of the kids in town, Andy (Wil Horneff) figures out what his parents and others are doing. He wants to stop them. His sister (Julianne Nicholson) thinks it is pretty cool what her parents are doing. The other teens in town (James Van der Beek and Anthony Ruivivar) think it’s great, being pot-heads themselves! It turns into a chase to get rid of the drugs before the DEA finds them.

About the Movie:
Stuart Burkin wrote and directed this ‘straight to video’ movie. And let me tell you . . . it seemed like it was a 10 hour long movie! Boring! I originally rented it to see if James Van der Beek could possibly shed his squeaky-clean Dawson’s Creek image for that of a druggie. No, No, No he was not successful! He seemed to overplay the part, which made it unbelievable. Wil Horneff, on the other hand, played the part given to him well. I’m not saying it was a good part, but he made it a little more interesting to watch.

I was glad to see Julianne Nicholson in this film, (she is now starring on the FOX show Ally McBeal) but her part was very small and they did not use her to her potential. All in all I would not recommend this movie. It was slow, draggy and just plain uninteresting!

Enjoy!
