Pros:Set, Costumes, Ewan McGregor, Directing, Everything
Cons:NONE
The Bottom Line: If you only see one movie this year, See this one! Its a treat for the eyes and ears!
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I had heard that this movie was really good. I was prepared to be disappointed, you know, high hopes that are usually dashed in the movie theater. Well, I was shocked, surprised, and riveted to my seat. Have you ever fallen in love with a film? This film will captivate you and steal your heart. This is the quality of movie you hope to see every time you go the movie theater. The kind that makes you want to go see it again the minute its over.
Everything about this movie was excellent. It was a roller coaster of sound, movement, and color. The soundtrack to the film is excellent. I can't wait to buy the CD. The songs didn't seem to be out of place or intrusive. Of course, if you want to be historically correct, Madonna and Elton John songs were not around in 19th Century France.
The story and script were excellent. It is a love story, but it doesn't seem rehashed like other chick flick films that have shown up lately. The script and story really had no holes. The dialogue wasn't terribly cheesy. It seemed to be solid and deep. The movie moved well, you will not be bored. The songs actually fit into the movie. The Elephant love song medley is actually a conversation between Ewan's Character and Nicole's character where he is trying to get her to give him one night since he can't pay.
I thought the acting was great. I knew that Ewan was a good actor, he just needed a good movie with a solid script behind him to show his ability. I know he did that "Eye of the Beholder" that was terrible and he was unremarkable in Episode I, but I knew he had good acting in him. This movie lets him portray the ability he has. His expressionable face is great for the character of Christian the writer. He has a great singing voice which lets him carry off the musical well.
I don't really care for Nicole, but I thought she did a great acting job as well. I can not think of anyone else who would have played a better Satine. Her voice allows her to pull off the musical aspect as well. The Duke, Richard Roxburgh, had the perfect look as a cross between dorky and nobility that leads one instantly dislike his character. The Casting for the film was well done.
Baz Luhmann's directing should be mentioned as well. The movie sports the same look as Romeo and Juliet with its great use of bright color, and dark backgrounds. It has a chaotic beginning, then settles down to tell its story. The sped up shots, and the sweeps of Paris were grand. The shots are very beautiful and artistic looking. The movie is a genuine piece of art. A feast for the eyes.
The story is a love story. Christian (Ewan), a penniless writer, falls in love with the courtesan Satine, Nicole. Of Course there are two tiny obstacles in love's way, the first is the fact he can not pay, but one should not have to pay for love. Secondly, her employer Harry Zidler has sold her to the Duke in exchange for his financial backing to turn the Moulin Rouge into a respectable theater.
The movie was well done all the way around. Its the best movie I've seen in a long, long time. Go see this movie, its like nothing you have ever seen. I will see this one again in the theater!!!
