Poison: Greatest Video Hits - More Than Just Video After Video
Written: Jan 22, 2010
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:good selection of videos, good material in between the videos
Cons:could have been remastered better
The Bottom Line: Even for people who were just casual fans during the hair-band era, I think this is something that should be looked at once, at least.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
This DVD is a combination of two VHS releases by the rock band Poison. Sight for Sore Ears and Flesh & Blood. Sight for Sore Ears was released in 1989 and contained videos of songs from the band’s first two albums. Flesh & Blood was released in 1991 and contained videos from the band’s third album as well as behind-the-scenes footage.
Combined into a single DVD, this makes for some pretty good material, even to people who were just casual fans of the band back in the day. As if that’s not enough, there are three videos that were never released other than to the video music channels: So Tell Me Why, Stand (with a Harlem Choir singing backup), and Until You Suffer Some (Fire and Ice).
Before even the first video, there's a clip of lead singer Bret Michaels talking about his philosophy of life. Okay, we might not be all that interested, but at least it's something more than video after video. There are clips of the road crew, other members of the band, etc. all doing the work involved with touring as well as preparing for the latest show. Bret gives insight into each of the videos on the disc as well as digressing into his feelings about each member of the band.
Of the videos, most of them are performance videos except for I Want Action which us a combination of performance and every teenage boy's dream of what life is about, partying and sex. Some videos combine the performance piece quite well with a sotry, such as Fallen Angel which has a backdrop of a naive girl's move to California.
The videos often start with a short piece that segues into the performance. Some work better than others, such as in Nothing But a Good Time with Bret as a dishwasher who dreams of getting away from his menial job.
The picture quality is pretty good. These appear to have been remastered. It’s not the best job I’ve seen by far, but it does seem better than other releases I’ve viewed where nothing has been done.
Between the two VHS releases being combined together as well as the added material and videos, this is a release well worth picking up, even for the casual fan. It shows the growth of the band through the years, as well as some of their highs and lows. It was good to hear them acknowledge some of their less than stellar moments, although many of the fodder for the tabloids over the years isn’t talked about. Still, Poison: Greatest Video Hits is a good release and much better than some DVDs that just pack in the videos and nothing else.
