greenspan's Full Review: A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Steven Spielberg has never made a bad movie, however this one is the closest thing to it. I don't know if it was the anticipation for the release of another Spielberg film that made it less than I expected, but if this movie didn't have Steven Spielberg's name attached to it's marqee it would not have been as disappointed, but we have grown to expect a higher grade of quality film producing from the master of film makers. The marketing of this film had lead me to great expectations as well. Trailers had hit the screens promising the Spielberg movie A.I. for months and months, fueling my level of desire while bringing my level anticipation to it's highest intensity.
The movie deals with the inability of robotic human form coexisting with the human race. Even when the robot is produced to possess the good humanistic qualities and is equipped with emotions as well. The terminal relationship due to the mortality of humans make for a truly tragic existence for the robotic unit which is not faced with his own mortality. While it's own mortality is not at issue, the robotic with emotions has to deal with the loss of the humans that he is programmed to bond with. Acceptance with his sibling and what would be his peer group proves to be difficult for the young human's inability to adapt to the idea of sharing their world.
I don't think this movie should be viewed by very young children. A.I. deals with some adult issues and has a level of violence with scenes of robotic destruction by the human society that have been programmed to live in a disposable world. However, the sight of elimination of robots while most likely will entertain the average movie viewer by touching their sensitivity to their own attitudes of our throw away and waste world, will be a bit much for the sensitive child. I think that Spielberg is making a point throughout the film concerning our race's inability to accept their own mortality with responsibility by bringing on their own demise.
The film begins in a time period of the future and spans to far beyond. It is amazing how pristine some objects have remained with the passage of time. (See the movie you will understand.)
Overall, I found this movie to have major lags and lacking in regards to it's entertainment value. I found myself checking my watch to see when it was going to be over. Spielberg, I love you and your works have been great in the past, but when it comes to movies about robotics I would have to recommend Robin William in "Bicentennial Man". Of course Robin is number two in my book of great actors, second only to Dustin Hoffman. Although this film didn't rate as being of the quality of the Spielberg I have grown to respect and love, it was thought provoking and entertaining to a level that would make many film producers be proud, were it their own.

The above listed site has an artificial intelligence program called Eliza that I used to use on my Bulletin Board System back in the 80's. You might find it interesting. I find it more so, that they are using a computer program that existed in the 1980's to illustrate artificial intelligence. If you are a vintage computer geek (old like me) you may remember the program on a BBS in your region. It was on my Renegade BBS that went by the name of Modemville USA. If you are a SysOp that got put under by the internet's popularity you might remember the name of the program as being "Eliza." Try calling the program Eliza in your chat and be careful as Eliza doesn't like foul language and will scold you for it's usage. As you are using it just realize that computers have evolved to the level that they have and robotics will eventually become a reality in the future. The program "Eliza" is kid safe and the youngsters will enjoy chatting with her, but be prepared Eliza is like David (the robot in Spielberg's film) capable of endless chat.
