Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
In what was suppose to be a ground-breaking animated film, be it the beautiful animation, and the adult theme, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is too little and too late. There is a better animated film out there right now, Shrek, and there was a better one out there this time last year, Titan A.E..
Don't get me wrong, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a good looking movie, but it's just dull when compared to the films I mentioned above. The film has nothing new to offer to audiences. You can get as much entertainment in this film, as you can staying home and watching cartoons.
The plot feels incredibly rushed. Within the first five minutes, we learn how Atlantis was destroyed, and how it can be found again. Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) is perhaps a character that loser kids will like, but I found him to be one of the most irritating characters in recent memory.
It's your typical plot, Thatch is all heart, and no one believes him; he convinces them, but later finds out that not everyone is who the appear to be. It's your typical Disney stuff. Nothing new. I thought Disney was suppose to be making a serious film? So would someone please explain to me the character of Mole. He's a short fat little man, who loves dirt, and mumbles. I hate to say it, but I'd rather see a film with musical numbers, and funny side-kicks; than a film that wants you to take it seriously, but can't do the same for itself.
There's a neat little chase in the beginning of the film, it has good animation I suppose, but it looks like they stole the scene directly from Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. The film has neat explosions, but they are certainly things you've seen before. The animation was far cleaner, and better looking in Titan A.E..
In a film called, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, you'd expect to see something about Atlantis, well you do, but not nearly enough. The film takes it's good time getting there, mostly pointless scenes, and once it gets there, it feels rushed. Instead of doing the lame twists, and action, why couldn't they just make a film about Atlantis. Going into their way of life, how their culture is different than ours, go into more detail about the unusual creatures that live there. Make the story about Atlantis, and their way of life, instead of just using it as a backdrop for action scenes.
I really expected more from Disney. This is one of their worst films since The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Ironically, it has the same director as that film, Gary Trousdale. I don't think the kids will really dig it, Shrek is the funnier more entertaining film, adults will probably like Final Fantasy more. The film disappoints.
In a summer of animated films, who knew that a simple donkey in Shrek, would be more mysterious than Atlantis?
