Phenomenal Movie About the Car-Racing Scene
Written: Feb 05 '02
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Something about this movie was really awesome. Maybe it was the high-speed car chases. Maybe it was the adrenaline that was rushing in my blood after I witnessed the need for speed. Maybe it was just the sweet looking cars and beautiful women. I don’t know, but something about this movie really got me going.
I’m a car enthusiast; you could probably gather that much if you read my review of carpoint. Well, enough of publicizing myself, and onto the movie review. Anyway, like I said, I’m a car enthusiast and I love car movies like this one, and something along the lines of Gone In Sixty Seconds. To me, its just so exhilarating to watch the cars speed down the road, or jump in front of oncoming trains, or just go cruising. I love cars, I love the VROOOOM sounds, and most importantly I love pretty much everything that has to do with cars.
Synopsis
Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) joins the street-racing scene after working as an employee at a nearby car shop. Brian musters up the courage, and the skill, and decides to enter a street race with his car on the line. Dominic Teretto (Vin Diesel) ends up beating Brian, shortly before the cops arrive at the scene. Everyone scrambles, and Dominic is being chased for his life. Who saves him? None other then Brian of course, and from then on they develop a sort of bond, or friendship if you will. Things start to become complicated when Brian’s true identity is first revealed to his newfound girlfriend, Mia (Jordana Brewster), who just happens to be Dominic’s sister.
Storyline
I’ll admit, the plot was weak. But, you should have already assumed that because it was just supposed to be a cool movie about racing cars, which it was, very cool. There was a great shocking twist somewhere in the movie, and I was astonished that it was in the movie. The twist in my opinion changed the movie from being a 3-star to a 4-star. I didn’t especially like the plot because it was very unoriginal. If you’ve seen this movie, you’ll notice that it’s exactly like Point Break, except in the street racing world, and not the surfing/beach world. That part I didn’t like, but who really cares. I’m sure that Point Break copied its idea from some other movie and it’s not really a big deal. Although the plot might have been a little weak, I think this movie accomplished its goals. It was a strong car-racing movie that was packed with great action and suspense. I was entertained, and I thought the camera angles of the cars’ engines, interiors, and exteriors were amazing. The camera shots were really spectacular, and the story was a little weak, but the action was great.
Characters
The characters were semi-cheesy. Their dialog was very cliché and very stupid. I don’t remember any specifics, but I do remember that I buried my head in my hands a few times because I was in shock at the lines being delivered. Aside from the horrible dialog, I actually grew fond of Dom and his gang and Brian. I really liked them. I know I liked the characters if, by the end, I actually cared what was going to happen to them. Dominic was your classic tough guy. He got banned from Race Wars for beating a guy almost to death with a ¾ wrench. He is legendary on the Los Angeles streets as the best racer around, which he proves. He kicks a-s-s and he drives fast, he’s Dominic. ---If you think I should take out the word a-s-s because it's against the rules, then write a comment because I don't want to do anything mean against epinions in any way--- Vin Diesel did a great job. He perfectly fit the tough guy persona it really showed throughout. I loved Vin Diesel in Boiler Room, but I especially loved him in this. Brian comes off as your average pretty boy, but he ends up showing us that there’s much more to him than a clean appearance. He dates the tough guy’s sister without permission, he puts his car on a line to racers he’s never even raced, and he has the guts to tell Dominic his major secret by the end. Brian ended up being a pretty boy, but at the same time being a gutsy macho man. I was really amazed with Paul Walker’s performance. I thought he was terrible in Varsity Blues and The Skulls, but I actually thought he was great in The Fast and the Furious. His performance was impressive, and he was a really good fit for his part as well. Mia was beautiful and tough. She had many of her brother’s qualities, which was smart on behalf of the writer, and I guess I would sum her up as a “pretty kitty.” That term just means that she had a beautiful side, but she was strong as a woman, and didn’t really let anyone get too close other then Brian. She had her guard up most of the time, and she was entertaining to watch. She was unpredictable and fun. Jordana Brewster did a great job playing Mia. I’d never seen her in any movie before, so I was impressed in watching her as a rookie actress. Jordana Brewster is gorgeous, and I also think she was good for her part. Some of Jordana’s scenes were a little cheesy and they looked a little forced or squeezed into the story, but other then that, she was a great choice.
End
I really thought this movie was nicely made. The scenes and their camera shots were wonderful and inventive, and the finished product turned out visually stunning. I loved watching this movie, and I never really got bored. It always seemed like there was enough going on, but not too much so that you couldn’t follow everything. There was a great balance. The forced love between Brian and Mia was cheesy, but I’d say it’s my only complaint. This movie taught me a few things about cars (something I never thought possible) and I was generally impressed. If you like action movies you should see this. If you like car/racing movies (Gone In Sixty Seconds, Driven) you should watch this. If you like Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, or Jordana Brewster you should watch this. I thought the movie as a whole was beautifully made and entertaining. Just check it out, there was nice suspense and great action, and overall, a great combo.
