LotR is a page in cinematography (Reply to this comment)

PJ and his wonderfully fanatic crew have created a true masterpiece. Even more so in the Special Extended Edition, I think. Their devotion to the job practically shines through. 'Lord of the Rings' is one of my all-time favorite movies (esp. 'The Fellowship'), and I thank you for the great review. Keep up the good job!
Cheers,
Arashi

Your enthusiasm for the movie shone through...now I feel like watching the movie again! Agree with you on most parts of the review. I didn't quite like Galadriel but I thought Arwen was ok.

Excellent review. I had to agree with you on just about everything, except for your dislike of the female casting. Personally, I thought Cate Blanchett's icy demeanor was perfect for the role, and Liv Tyler brought youthfulness, toughness, and grace ( all neccesary for an elf, lol ) to her role. Other than that, again, awesome job and keep it up.

Greatpilgrim (and I love that name, although "Victoria" is pretty regal too), your review truly does justice to the movie. I distinctly remember staggering breathlessly out, and how distant and mundane the world felt as I drove home. I went back and re-read from "Hobbit" to "Silmarillian" afterword!
Your review captures those feelings.
Cheers, Brett

This movie (and it's earlier chapter) are the only things since the books themselves which did not disappoint me.
It is, to the books, what TV is to radio.

You're right on the money comparing it with the first of the original Star Wars films. It has that same feeling.
I usually hate these fantasy type movies but this one sucked me in and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice review too, BTW.

SSHHHH!! I changed my picture because it's scary how much I look like that Liv Tyler picture. And I'm not a redhead like that old pic I had up there. But don't tell anyone my secret!

Incredible Review!! (Reply to this comment)
by grimjack2
Wow. You don't do a lot of movie reviews, but when you do... I am totally in envy of reading that you have had 246 member reads. You are approaching ptiemann levels of readership here!
You done a great job of explaining why it is you left the theater feeling the way you did. Your love of it really shined through in your words. I'm amazed you didn't describe the film as "my precious".
While I had no problem with Blanchet as the Elf Queen, I was a little bothered by Arwen. I have to ask why you've changed your profile picture to be of Liv Tyler when you didn't like her in the film either. I think they dubbed her voice or something, because it just didn't sound like her to me.
This is an excellent review, and I can see why you consider it to be your best.

LOTR addict (Reply to this comment)
by trasjman
I went to the movie premiere in December 2001. I was totally stunned. Sat in my seat for 5 minutes before I got up.
Before I went I was a little apprehensive, because I read the book(s) for like 5 times and had my own images of Middle-earth. But when I saw the film, I had the feeling Peter Jackson stole my brain. Practically everything looked like I imagined it!
Some friends of mine were disappointed by the open ending. So I gave them my copy. Now they're asking me all the time when the next one will come to the theaters.
And your review was great as usual!

I thought that the movie was good, but it didn't satisfy me on the grand level I was expecting. I even had the courage to see it again but to the same effect. All in all, not too bad, but I wouldn't place it ahead of other movies much like it's kind.

The most amazing... (Reply to this comment)
by elomage
...part of the movie for me was the creation of all the fantastic worlds, down to the smallest details. And I know that it is not so easy even in these computer-ever-powerful times. A LOT of good work has been put in the movie, and that was the most stunning aspect for me.
Also, the movie was good for those not familiar with the book. My other half said the three hours were not enough. Now we have the book(s).
Very impressed with the movie and your reviews!

It's truly amazing how much I agree with your opinion. It's awesome! You can put into words what I can only think in my mind. I have to agree with the casting of the women. Even if they would have switched the roles, I think it would have been better. I cried at the same moments too! Anyhow, fabulous review! You have a gift with words!

Fantastic review! (Reply to this comment)
by serc
Oddly enough, the only preview we got in Northfield was to the next Austin Powers movie (how is that for a surreal combination?).
I agree with you about the Liv Tyler thing. Not that I have an ideal Arwen in my mind; it's just that she gives me flashbacks to Armageddon, and every time I see her face, I think of that lame song, "Cause I Miss You Babe, and I Don't Want to Miss a Thing...."
Excellent, on target review. I can't wait to see this movie again!

The Arwen character was not created for the movie... she played a small role in the story itself, but if you look in the Appendix (at the end of "Return of the King") the entire story of her and Aragorn is present, minus the "heroine" aspect, which is the only thing added.

Are you kidding? There's three here! Viggo Mortenson is the obvious hottie, but then there's the very appealling Orlando Bloom, and of course I'm an Elijah Wood freak, so I think he's the best looking one of the bunch. ;-) You WILL find guys to admire in this movie!

Great review (Reply to this comment)
by opinionated3
Excellent review, I will have to wait til it comes out on DVD. I remember reading The Tolkien books way back when I was a teen and I can only hope they captured the imagination of Tolkien when he created the story. I have heard a mixed bag of critics who loved it/ hated it. I prefer to hear it from fellow normal people here on Epinions. As far as the Arwen character goes from what I hear they created her character for the Movie version. I will have to re-read the book to see for myself. Great job on your review keep up the great work.

You know it's a great movie, when the seven year old behind you protests at the end, "Mommie, that was way too short!" I found myself with the same complaint-- I could easily have sat in the chair for another three hours...
Great review!
