Pros:acting, solid story
Cons:none
The Bottom Line: This is a wonderful romantic comedy, with a solid script and good acting.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
This movie delivered exactly what it promised, a smart romantic comedy. It has a solid script with good dialogue and good acting.
The movie boasts an excellent cast including Catherine Zeta-Jones as the brat and actress Gwen, which she played so very well. John Cusack as the heart broken/crazy actor Eddie. He does a good job as the broken hearted man that just can't seem to get it back together and get on with his life, he's still hanging on. Julia Roberts as Kiki, the insecure, overworked, and under appreciated sister, who is an assistant to Gwen. And Billy Crystal as the publicist, Lee, who gets the ball rolling. All the parts were cast perfectly and each played their roll perfectly. Roberts and Cusack had wonderful chemistry together which is important in this kind of film.
The movie has no unusal special effects, no explosions, no dinosaurs, in short this is not a guy's film, you want special effects see Swordfish or Jurassic Park III. It has one roof shot where Cusack is on the roof and may be about to jump. What it does have is a great little story about the perfect Hollywood couple that breaks up. Gwen and Eddie where the perfect Hollywood couple and starred in many romantic films together and made a mint doing it. She falls in love with another man and breaks it off with Eddie (although she has yet to serve him with divorce papers). He loses it when she leaves him and goes into a mental well being institute in the mountains while she tries to save her failing career, everyone wants to get them back together.
The movie begins with Lee after he has lost his job. His company has the last Gwen and Eddie movie, but the crazy directer Hal (Christopher Walken) won't release the film before the media preview. Lee is persuaded to help the studio plan the media preview in exchange for getting his job back. He needs to keep the press busy at the preview without having to show the film. They need Gwen and Eddie to be there. So Billy calls Kiki who talks Gwen into going and Eddie goes there with hopes of getting Gwen back. There are many funny situations as the couple does press interviews, and functions involved with the film that no one has seen. The characters in the movie are developed very well as we see Kiki falling in love with Eddie and Eddie start to return those feelings. We also see Kiki, who was overweight and shy, finding her own feet and getting out of the shadow of her sister. We also see how bratty Gwen is and how she only thinks of herself. Insights to how cutthroat the business can be, are seen through Lee when he does things that benefit movie company instead of the actors.
The comedy is not overdone and fits in well in the film, and the dialogue is not as cheesy as it could have been. The movie also shows how badly a romantic film could be with the cheesy shots of the movies that Eddie and Gwen had made. This movie is not as emotionally involved as some romantic films like Return to Me, or not as connectable as Someone Like You. But it is a very good romantic comedy.
