After all the hype and considering the stellar cast how could America's Sweethearts go wrong? Well it does. Not that it's a total waste of time. John Cusack is adorable as the "love struck" ex of Catherine Zeta Jones...and Billy Crystal (who I also love) manages to get in a number of good lines...but all in all this is a simple, predictable, mildly-amusing comedy that does not do justice to its stars. .................................................................(Note: I have WebTV and cannot use paragraphs so I use dots.)..............................................................................................
There were two huge turnoffs in this movie. One was the Doberman licking a fully clothed Billy Crystal's private parts through his trousers. Gross! I knew a woman once who had a standard Poodle and she thought it was hysterical when he would go for someone's crotch. Not my idea of humor. The second was the makeup used to make Julia Roberts look 60 pounds heavier. Ghastly and totally unbelievable. ....................................................................................................
Another hard to believe premise was Julia playing second fiddle to Catherine. Both are extremely attractive women and the only reason one could play second fiddle to the other would be from a lack of self esteem, not a lack of looks.
.................................................................................................... I loved the cast of this film, but hated seeing them have to go through the trite story line. Give me Zorro, Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil, Erin Brockovich, and When Harry Met Sally...these movies showed the star qualities of the stars...not America's Sweethearts.
