Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
The Score has a great ensemble cast. Robert DeNiro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando, and Angela Basset. Brando and Basset aren't in much of the movie, just a scene here and there. DeNiro and Norton are in all most all of the movie.
DeNiro is a thief. When the movie starts he is breaking into a safe during a party. He is almost caught by a couple that goes into that room for some privacy, but he gets away with the diamonds he was after. You see how he gets away from the scene and makes his way back to Montreal where he owns a nightclub.
Brando plays Max. He fences the stuff DeNiro steals. They have been working together for years. Max has what he is calling a big score for DeNiro. 4 million dollars. Max doesn't say what the item is then, just that it is stuck in the customs building in Montreal. DeNiro doesn't want to do. He never works in his own backyard. Max doesn't want to let it drop, and says he has a guy on the inside to handle the security system. DeNiro still isn't interested then, but a little later he decides to do it. He makes some stipulations. He will be in charge. He will come up with the plan. If he thinks things are going right or senses any trouble, he walks. It is only after he agrees that he finds out what they are after, a gold scepter from France.
Edward Norton plays Jack, Max's guy on the inside of the customs building. He has a whole different persona when he is at the customs building. There he is Brian, a young man who has some sort of mental disability. Everyone likes Brian. He can pretty much go anywhere in the customs building and no one pays any attention to him. He has been able to get copies made of keys, blueprints for the building, information on the alarm set up, pretty much all the information they need to get in and get the scepter. Jack is arrogant and cocky, demanding respect from DeNiro and Brando. He thinks he can take chances and not get caught. Norton is brilliant in both his roles. Jack and Brian are completely different, but he makes them both work. When he is at the customs building, you believe he is Brian. Anyone who saw Primal Fear will be reminded of the wonderful acting he did in that movie playing a murder suspect with a split personality.
Once DeNiro decides to do it, they start making plans. DeNiro takes charge and makes the decisions. He and Jack clash a few times, but Jack always backs down. They each seem wary of trusting the other. On top of making the plans for the break in, DeNiro has to deal with his girlfriend, Angela Basset, wanting him to just walk away and forget about this job.
They have some complications during their planning that they have to deal with. They also encounter some complications right before they are ready to steal the scepter. The last half hour or so of the movie had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. This was a very good movie and I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see a movie with some action without a lot of violence.
