"Barbie gets dumped by Ken and goes to Harvard Law!"

Written: Aug 03 '01 (Updated Aug 03 '01)
Pros:A few good belly laughs
Cons:A little too many blondes, predictable plot
The Bottom Line: Ever wonder what would happen if Barbie came to life and became a lawyer? This review reveals most of the plot, so if you don't want to know, don't read!

Plot Details: This opinion reveals everything about the movie's plot.

This evening I returned from seeing Legally Blonde, a recent comedy starring Reese Witherspoon. Now I love a good comedy, so my wife and I went to see this. I can honestly say that going into it, I wanted to see it more than my wife, but she enjoyed it more than I did.

Legally Blonde stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a sorority girl at the campus of CU-LA (California University at Los Angeles). She is the president of her sorority (Delta Nu) and is a very popular blonde. She has all the right clothes, friends, a great car, and Bruiser, her little chihuahua. She is in love with Warner who is played by Matthew Davis.

Her little sorority girlfriends help her prepare for her date with him and they all celebrate that she expects him to propose this night. Much to her surprise, he dumps her because he needs to find someone more worthy ("If I'm going to be a senator by 30").

She decides she can win him over by showing she is "worthy." She applies to Harvard Law School (where he is headed) and includes a "video essay" in her application. The video essay was very demeaning toward women. Would you appear in a bikini to apply for law school? For some reason, Harvard accepts her (so the plot of the movie can go on).

Once at Harvard she finds Warner is already engaged to Vivian (Selma Blair), a former girlfriend and someone who will help his political career. Of course, she is also in the law class. She becomes distraught and stops for an emergency manicure where she meets Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge - also known as Stiffler's mom from American Pie).

She helps Paulette get her confidence up and date (and marry) the UPS guy in addition to getting her dog back from her ex.

Meanwhile, back at Harvard Law, she is discriminated against because she is a blonde. She works to prove that she is worthy and excels in her classes. She switches from her heart shaped notebook to a Tangerine Apple iBook (great choice! I'm a long-time Mac user) and takes her studies seriously. She eventually gets on as an intern with a firm and joins Vivian and Warner as two of the other interns.

The three (along with a fourth), end up working to defend a woman (Ali Larter playing the character, Brooke Taylor Windham) who is accused of shooting her husband (34 years her elder). Elle learns her alibi, but swears to secrecy (they are both Delta Nu sisters). Elle's mission is to make certain that Brooke gets of free, because she is innocent.

She finally does get Brooke off free by proving the daughter of the deceased shot her own father. The case is closed after Elle gets the daughter to confess because she wouldn't have been in the shower right after getting her hair permed. Don't you wish all murder trials were this easy?

In the end, she graduates, forgets her man and lands a good job with a big firm. Along the way, she deals with a professor Callahan (Victor Garber) who propositions her and she is inspired by Professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor).

They movie is filled with blonde references and she, of course, is supposed to be in the most up-to-date fashions, etc. It has been likened to Clueless, but I can't compare the two as I never saw Clueless. In general, the critics say that Legally Blonde isn't nearly as good.

The plot was very predictable as I saw through it early in the movie. My wife really liked it because it represents "girl power," but I can't say I'd want to watch it again. If you must see it, consider it a rental, or wait for it to hit network TV!
