Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I didn't have time to write three reviews this weekend, so let me give you the low-down. If you want to laugh this weekend, by all means go see American Pie 2. This is coming from a guy who did not like the original at all. American Pie 2 is very funny, perhaps the best comedy of the summer, and surprisingly sweet. If you want a few scares, and want to see some amazing acting, go see The Others. Kidman gives the second best female performance that we have seen all year. The best female performance all year has been Kidman in Moulin Rouge. See either of the two films, but I plead with you, I beg, do not waste your money on the foul Osmosis Jones.
Forget Scary Movie 2 or American Pie 2. The grossest, most off-putting film you'll see this year is Osmosis Jones. I'm not talking cool gross either, i'm talking 'let's walk out' gross.
I have always been a die-hard Farrelly Brother fan. You know, one of those true-blue fans that knows their true comic masterpiece has been Kingpin. This is the first film they have made that I do not like.
It seems the Farrelly brothers don't know when they have a good thing. The film starts off wonderfully. I really like the premise of having a white blood cell be a cop inside a body. A cop who fights germs and viruses like their common thugs. I also like some of the cleverness of using body parts and making them into a city. For all the pluses there are, the Farrelly Brother's cancel them all out with the sheer amount of gross gags.
Bill Murray is a repulsive sight in the film. The scary thing is, I think it's the real Bill Murray, just without make-up. His character Frank is made for the soul purpose of being gross. If this was real life, this man would have no friends, no job, and his daughter would be taken away from him. I guess the Farrelly brothers think being a fat pig is funny. Cause not only do we get Murray, but we also get Chris Elliot doing the same gig. Oh joy.
As unfunny as Murray is, and how terrible the animation is, I was willing to forgive. I enjoyed the premise, and I was willing to go with it. That's when the scene happened. A scene that is so foul, so sickening, that it ruined the entire film for me. Now I like gross gags as much as the next guy, but this scene just went too far. If you want to see the film, and you don't want the 'money shot' ruined, stop reading. If you want to know why I hate this film, brace yourself. The scene: Bill Murray has a zit! A pus filled zit that pulsates and twitches. The Farelly brothers constantly do close ups on the pimple, making the entire audience scream in agony. "Ewww" scenes are not "funny" scenes. Not only do we have to look at it, but here's the kicker, it explodes. Not only does it just explode, but it explodes into a woman's mouth. Yay.
After the film, my friend asked me how that scene is worse than say, the money shot in There's Something About Mary. You know, the famous "sperm on the ear, hair-gel scene." I thought about it, and I finally realized why the scene in Osmosis Jones is more offensive.
Which is more gross: Putting sperm in someone's hair, or putting pus in someone's mouth? They are both nasty, and the sperm move is defiantly raunchier because it's brought on sexually. However, the character reactions and personalities make up for a lot. Ben Stiller was a nice likable guy in There's Something About Mary, when he realized what happened, he was extremely embarrassed. He also didn't put the sperm on Diaz, it was on his ear, and she took it off his ear, thinking it was hair gel. So she was never in on the joke. It was just a terrible mistake on both their parts. Murray is obviously aware that he has a zit on his forehead the size of a quarter. He also doesn't mean for the zit to explode, so this is also an accident. When it does explode, the audience get's a shot of the pus erupting from the pore. We never had to see the actual ejaculation in There's Something About Mary, so already Osmosis is more gross. Then it goes into Molly Shannon's mouth. Can you imagine the germs there? Shannon is also aware, because she watches the zit explode into her mouth. She is in on the joke. Then Murray plays clueless, saying, "what's that white stuff on your lip?" Spare me! How is he unaware that his massive zit just exploded? Uh God, it made me sick.
I hope this review has made you all ill. Then perhaps you'll know the effect Osmosis Jones gives, and hey, you didn't have to pay for it! It made me ill just writing this review, and it just made me hate Osmosis Jones more. If you thought my review was sick, chances are the movie will do even a better job. Stay away.
The movie is rated PG and it's being marketed to the kids. You couldn't take them to a more offensive film. If I had a kid, i'd sooner take him to see American Pie 2, or anything else that is in theaters. Osmosis Jones should be concerned parents worst nightmare.
