Pros:Oozing sexual tension in every lovely frame, a gripping tale torn from real life.
Cons:Not for kids; Homosexual themes may be too much for some.
The Bottom Line: In 1965 these lovers were on the run for an unforgettable month.  Their story is both a gripping crime drama, and a tender gay romance.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Burnt Money (Plata Quemada) (2000) Directed by Marcelo Piñeyro

Nene and Ángel (Leonardo Sbaraglia and Eduardo Noriega) are known collectively as "The Twins"; not because they look alike, but because they are inseparable.   They are, in point of fact, lovers.  Ángel is Schizophrenic; he hears voices.  However, he knows they are just voices.  And he and Nene are well respected in the underworld circles they move through, those of Argentina, in 1965.  They are a set; you can't hire one without the other.

There is a job where they will be perfect.  Inside sources in the government know when a payroll shipment is being moved.  Fontana (Ricardo Bartis) is the brains, putting together the operation.  None of the players should know each other to well; El Cuervo (Pablo Echarri) is the wheelman.  The twins are the hitters.  Cuervo's girl, Vivi (Dolores Fonzi), has an apartment where they all hole up, hiding until time to pull the job.  Staying buried until the job is vital; it should be like a mini honeymoon, but Ángel has been listening to the voices, and they have informed him semen is sacred, and must be hoarded.  So Nene is cut off, and doesn't know why.

The job goes poorly; Ángel is hit, and Nene slaughters the guards in response.  They get the money, but now they are burned.  They have to fall back on plan B, hiding out in Uruguay,  until their employer can get them visas and travel papers to flee.  Of course, their employer has a lot more to lose than they, and would be happier if they were dead.

Holed up in a rat trap in Uruguay, they discover their pictures are everywhere.  It seems some heterosexual told his girlfriend what plan B was.  Now, they are scorching hot, holed up, searched for by both the law and the underworld, and nobody is sleeping with anyone.  How long can this pressure cooker go before it blows?

This crime thriller has a lot to offer; not only are the stars damn sexy men, they have that Ricky Ricardo joined the Rat Pack vibe.  The pacing, even in the "we are going insane with boredom" bits is tight and taunt, and the screen oozes with sexual chemistry.  Action, blood, sudden explosive violence, leavened with humor and wit, and deep glimpses of very damaged souls.  It makes a heady and memorable mix.

Add the fact that every bit of it is real, that all of it is historical fact, and you have a gripping unforgettable crime drama/gay romance.  A modern day Bonnie and Clyde, with a gay Latin vibe.

This being a subtitled classic, it is entered into foshizzlee's Foreign Film Write Off.
