Hearts Ensnared in Atlantis

Written: Sep 29 '01
Pros:Anthony Hopkins, beautiful story
Cons:Could be considered boring by some
The Bottom Line: Good film, with an actual plot, good acting and good cinematography. Come and leave your heart in Atlantis.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

The movie is an Autumn's evening walk into someone else's memory. This story about a child's coming of age laced with the unusual is a real gem. It comes complete with good cinematography, good acting and most importantly a good story.

The cinematography is very good in this movie. Real attention had been paid to the lighting, and there are a couple of unique shots (like a really good moving close-up) but they are not overused just to say, hey we can do this fancy camera work. There are also some beautiful park scenes.

The acting in this movie really great. Anthony Hopkins is his usual spectacular self as Ted. Ted is a mysterious, wise but very hunted man with an unusual gift that he considers to be a curse. I think Anton Yelchin did a wonderful job as Bobby. He seems to be a normal kid caught in a very unique situation. You watch this child mature through the scenes as he learns about life and his innocence melts away. Hope Davis holds her own as Bobby's mother. She also learns a little about life through the frames of the film. Her character seemed a little shallow and as not as well done as Bobby and Ted. The other two children in this film held their own very well and fit nicely into the character's roles. This was a case of good casting.

The story begins with a grown up Bobby receiving a message that his childhood friend has passed away. While attending the funeral, he finds out that his first love, Carol, also a childhood friend has passed away several years ago. This prompts him to go visit his childhood home and then memory comes and "kicks down the door" and takes him back to his eleventh birthday. His father passed away when he was five and causing his mother to have to work for a living. They also take renters on their top floor. An unusual man, Ted, rents the flat. He pays Bobby to read to him and to watch out for the low men who are hunting him. Through the course of the movie, Ted teaches Bobby about the world and helps him grow out of his childhood. There are other subplots like Carol's and Bobby's relationship and the relationship between Bobby and his mother. I can't say anymore without giving away the plot.

This movie wanders like a walk on a warm afternoon, at its own pace but you never tire with it. Its a very lovely film. It might make you take your own trip down memory lane to remember the people you have left behind. Its very story/plot driven. No explosions, no real action. If you are looking for a movie with non-stop action, explosions, and no plot you won't find it here. But the summer films should be available to rent soon.
