Bought what from the previous owner?

Monte Cristo is the island where he finds the treasure, which is unowned until he comes along (except, I suppose, that it is owned by the French government). He does buy it in the book, but no mention is made of this in the movie.

You have a good point, and I should have made that more clear. Although Edmund becomes the first Count, he did buy it from a previous owner.

I believe he was trying to get Mercedes back, but was stubborn and still cautious because of how she betrayed him (in his mind) But I don't think he ever stopped loving her. Thanks for the comments!

Very nice review.

Two quick things though. He doesn't become the next Count of Monte Cristo, since he makes the title up out of thin air. He also doesn't really have the goal of getting Mercedes back, since he is actually rather perturbed at her in the beginning and wants nothing to do with her.
