THE FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS NO SPOILERS
Make no doubt about, Vanilla Sky is about as strange, psychedelic, and as cool as any movie can be. It's a movie you need to sit down with and just absorb, the final result is quite chilling. This film did all the things for me Mulholland Drive didn't.
I'm not going to discuss a single plot point with this film. I feel it would be unfair to give even the smallest details. This is the type of film that will work better if you don't have a clue which direction it is going in. If you haven't seen the original Spanish film, Abre los Ojos, which I haven't, avoid all reviews of Vanilla Sky and go in with an open mind, and prepare for something quite unusual.
Not talking about the plot has left me with very little to talk about, but lets talk about the kind of mood Vanilla Sky creates. Walking into the theater I went in with the knowledge that the majority of the reviews Vanilla Sky had been getting were negative, I took that under consideration. Then there is Cameron Crowe films, I really liked Almost Famous, but I feel it is slightly overrated. I liked Jerry Maguire, and the other Cameron Crowe films mean nothing to me. I went into Vanilla Sky not really knowing what to expect, and I was blown away by it. On one hand you have one of the more bizarre films to come around in sometime, and on the other hand, you have a beautiful and tragic love story.
Vanilla Sky is filled with some of the most lavish visuals I have ever seen in a film. If nothing else, the gorgeous look of the film is sure to stick with me for a long time. Along with the haunting visuals, the film has an exquisite soundtrack.
Tom Cruise continues to grow as an actor. By choosing to make more risky films, such as this, Magnolia, and Eyes Wide Shut, he is really growing as an artist. It would seem at first the role would come easy to Cruise. Playing a snot-nose rich prick is obviously something that's natural to him. Once the film progresses however, the role becomes far more complicated and layered. Cruise gives one of the strongest performances of the year with Vanilla Sky.
PenÚlope Cruz, reprising the same role she hand in the original film, absolutely shines playing the Cruise obsession. However, she is nothing more than an object of beauty in the film. The real female power comes from Cameron Diaz. Diaz gives a performance that requires attention. I hope the Academy pays attention, and I would like to see her nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Both Kurt Russell and Jason Lee give strong supporting roles as well.
Cameron Crowe has made quite the film with Vanilla Sky. I have never seen the original version of the film, but after seeing Vanilla Sky, I don't want to, because Vanilla Sky means too much to me, and I don't want to damage any feelings I have toward the film. It's impossible to have a reaction to the film unless you see the entire film. Vanilla Sky comes together like a beautiful symphony. It is also the type of film that you may need to view multiple times. I'm not saying Vanilla Sky is for everyone, but for certain individuals like myself, it might just be the tastiest cinematic treat of the year.
