I will explain why you should see the unrated version of this film, but first, what I will not do in this review is explain the plot of this film—this has been successfully elucidated by many other reviewers. In addition, I am a person that likes to know very little about a film before seeing it, and instead formulate my own opinion of the plot, characters, and overall quality of the movie unfettered from outside influence.

Why should you see this movie?

I am discouraged by the number of reviewers who only emphasize the sexual aspects of this film. This superficial viewpoint will cause one to see why this is such a great film. American films have moved away from storytelling, character development and solid acting, and instead towards action and special effects. This movie satisfies the mature viewer who wishes to view films with the former characteristics. (note: I find it interesting that when creating a review for epinions you are required to rate the "action," "special effects," and "suspense" of the film. This is further proof of my point that American film-making has lost sight of the "real" qualities that make movies great. Often, movies lacking in action, special effects, and suspense are those that are most memorable.)

Y Tu Mama Tambien provides the viewer with insight into the relationship between two friends. Furthermore, the viewer will be allowed to understand, through extreme events, whether this relationship is able to transcend outside influences.

This is a story strong on character development. You actually care for the characters. This is enhanced through strong acting and an exceptional script. Which leads me to:

Why should you see the unrated version?

This is not a kids movie. We all know that. People viewing this film should be mature enough to understand acts of sexuality. The R rated versions seeks to remove some of the “sex scenes.”

However, who is to say that simply because two characters are engaging in intercourse the plot ceases to exist? In fact, I would suggest that some of the most important events in this movie occur during the final sex scene, and missing out on that scene (via the R rated version) will completely change your understanding of the final moments of the film.

If you are really interested in understanding the relationship between these characters, I urge you to buy the unrated version of this film.
