I got the Majestic a while ago when I found it at a dirt cheap price and bought it. I like Jim Carrey movies despite knowing that this wasnt a comedy. I watched it and I found it kind of charming, its a shame Carrey earn the reputation of a clown, because of that when he does more serious roles like the Majestic people turn to be annoyed because hes not bouncing off the wall. Still its a good movie.
The majestic takes place during the 1950s when the house committee on un-American activities was trying to route out communist sympathizers in Hollywood. Of course all they did was wreck a lot of peoples lifes and start what is known as the Hollywood blacklist.
The movie centers around Peter Appleton an up and coming movie writer who finds out when he gets to work on day that his name has been added to the list. He looses his job, the script for the movie he was working on, and his girlfriend. Drunk and distraught he decides to take a drive down the highway and manages to drive off a bridge while trying to dodge a possum. He wakes up on a beach in a small town called Lawson, he has no memory of who he is and what happen before waking up on the beach. To add in an extra twist Lawson lost most of there young men during world war 2, and Peter is mistaken for a young solider that went MIA named Luke. Lukes father Harry believes it must be a miracle and takes him home to a run down theater called the Majestic. While Peter lives the life of Luke and helps Harry reopen the theater and falls in love with his girlfriend, the FBI is searching for him thinking that Peter is a top leader of the communism party.
Now what makes the majestic good is just Carrey himself he carries the role of Luke and Peter makes them believable. First off Peter Appleton is not a bad guy at all, his one character flaw is that he doesnt stand up for what he believes in and is always spoken for. And when he does regain his memory he only lies about it one time, and its for unselfish reasons. As for Luke Carry first plays him with confusion since hes amnesia and isnt sure, but once the towns people convince him that he is Luke he turns into a bit more optimistic go getter and helps pick the town out of the trenches.
Of course what help is the supporting characters Harry, Odele, Odeles father the town doctor and several other supporting characters that give Peter a home while hes Luke. A lot of town characters to get there own development as well and we see how Lukes return affects there lifes and when they all pitch into reopen the majestic it is a good scene.
If there is one bad thing might be the pacing is a bit off some scenes go on just a little bit to long and you do start to loose interest in them, while other scenes are done a bit to quickly. I wouldnt have minded a little more interest in Peter before the amnesia hits because we dont really learn who Peter is in till after the amnesia wears off.
DVD extras.
The DVD does a few interesting but meager extras. We get some deleted scenes, info on Jim Carrey career up to the point of the Majestic. The trailer for the Majestic and then some info on the Hollywood black list.
Final Recommendation.
The Majestic is a good movie and I recommend it as a rental. Its not Jim Carreys usual flare but he nails both roles of Luke and Peter and even does a good job on the emotional scenes. Its been out for several years so you should find it on the discount DVD isle.
