Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
This afternoon my hubby (Payso) and I decided to go and see a matinee. I really wanted to see "Ali", but living in a small down does have it's drawbacks...our small theater isn't showing it yet. I was disappointed but I've also wanted to see The Majestic so off we went.
While this movie was a little slow moving at times, and very sentimental, I couldn't help walking out with a smile on my face. It is a Frank Capra type of movie that gets a little sappy at times, and yet the feel good, happy ending is what made me enjoy it so much.
The Facts
Jim Carrey stars as Peter Appleton/Luke Trimball
Laurie Holden as his love interest Adelle, Martin Landau as his father and also starring Brent Brisco and Bruce Campbell, David Ogden Stiers and James Whitmore. There is also a young man named Matt Weins that plays Spencer that makes me think of my grandson in a few years...have to find out if my daughter sees the resemblance...oops sorry, the ramblings of a Gramma.
The movie is directed by Frank Darabont and produced by Darabont, Liz Glotzer and Michael Sloane. It was released December 21, 01 and distributed by Warner Bros.
The Story
Peter Appleton is a young up and coming screenwriter in the 1950's and looks like he has life by the tail and only good things coming his way. Unfortunately for Peter, he is accused of being a Communist and Blacklisted in Hollywood. After a few drinks, he decides to go for a ride to clear his head. The scene of him inside of his car and falling into a river is one of the more dramatic moments of the movie. Of course you know he is going to make it, but there is that brief moment of concern too.
His life makes a dramatic change as he is discovered laying on a beach, with no idea who he is, or how he got there. Suddenly he is the hero of a small town called Lawson and tries to live up to the town's memory of Luke Trimble. His involvement with Adelle is touching and sweet as she recognizes that he is becoming the man that Luke was, by facing some of his fears and standing up for what he knows to be right.
My View
While this movie was rather predictable and a little sappy at times, I felt that Jim Carrey did an awesome job with his role and made me enjoy him in yet another movie. I don't always care for the roles he plays...but The Majestic was a more serious and touching role for him.
Martin Landau was also terrific, as his father Harry. His elation at having his son back after 9 1/2 years of absence reminded me of the joy I have felt when seeing one of my own kids after a time of separation. (although nothing like that long!) Mr. Landau's death scene brought tears to my eyes as he slowly slipped away from his son.
I would recommend this movie for a calm, sentimental afternoon of viewing. There is no shoot 'em up, sex or lively action...which is why I enjoyed it so much!
