Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Black Hawk Down is a move that is approximately two hours and forty minutes long. It is based on a battle in (what I gather) Somalia. There is a safe zone somewhere in Pakistan where the American base is, and a city that is hostile to Americans. That city is controlled by a man named Aidad, and Aidad is the person that the Americans want to capture. Most of this movie basically shows the approximate fifteen-hour battle. Details have been shown in this movie to show the accuracy. In the beginning, you have to read a little introduction to understand this battle, and then the movie begins. Dates and times and present. As I can recall, the movie said that the helicopters and Jeeps started coming to the hostile area at 2:29 PM on October 3, 1993. I could be wrong, but it was something accurate like that.
Unlike another movie that Josh Hartnett was in, this movie did not focus on a love story or a hero story or something similar to Pearl Harbor. This movie is almost like a documentary...except for the fact that it is interesting. Every actor walked and acted like a real ranger or sergeant. On the battlefield, they carried their guns and covered each other as if they were the real thing. The surround sound in the movie theater allowed me to feel as if I was actually there without the risk of getting shot. Black Hawk Down showed the true effects of war. No one was invincible, lots of people were wounded, some killed. They were not shy about showing the blood and the wounds. There were a couple of things that my friend and I cringed at, but what can I say? I am a teenage girl.
Unlike most movies, there was no conflicts adding up to a climax and then rolling down to a happy ending. This was continuous, full of action, and never ending. The ending was not some corny happy ending, or some really sad ending, it was not even the end of the battle...exactly. It was not an open ending, either. I feel that this ending was unique compared to the other movies that I have seen.
My history teacher knows his history. He saw this movie and only named about two or three historical mistakes. They were very finite mistakes, also. However, he liked this movie so much that he recommended it to my whole class, which encouraged me to see it. From his perspective, it seemed that this movie was right on the money.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone that wants to experience a battle without risking their life. The scenes are so war-like, and does not focus on one person, really. I have written a positive critique for this movie because it deserves it.
