robndea's Full Review: Austin Powers in Goldmember
Plot Details: This opinion reveals no details about the movie's plot.
I thought I had more class. I thought I would go to this movie with my 17 year old son and we could talk about the shortcomings of this sort of humor....but how could I do that when I laughed through the ENTIRE movie?
Ostensibly a story of a secret agent (with time travel abilities) on a quest to meet his father, the plot becomes entirely secondary and to be honest, I couldn't tell you the details! The plot was only a vehicle to jump from one site gag to another pratfall to another joke. The site gags worked, and the body humor, though juvenile, seemed to catch everyone in the theater unaware and EVERYONE was laughing.
Mike Myer proved again he is an excellent and talented entertainer (can YOU dance on skates?!). Not only did he revive his previous characters of Powers, Dr. Evil, and Fat Bastard, he goes on to add the (rather flexible), sinister and unattractive "Goldmember".
Mini-me (Verne Troyer) has a much expanded role, and manages to make the most base site gags work. His character manages to steal scene after scene... he excels in the prison scene.
Though I was able to restrain myself somewhat, my son was wiping tears of mirth out of his eyes and spilling popcorn on all his seatmates during many of the more startling sketches. I don't think I will ever think about passing gas the same way again....or submarines, for that matter.
It became a game to identify celebrity cameos...look for Katie Couric, John Travolta, Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito, and Tom Cruise....just for starters. They seemed to be enjoying themselves!
A great movie to watch with your teenagers...really.
Warning! "Goldmember" humor is aimed DIRECTLY at the 15-20 year age group and in no way is appropriate for those under 13. I was shocked to see parents with 5 and 7 year old children attending the movie. I can only surmise they based their attendance on the fact the early Austin Powers movies were more innuendo and less graphic.
