Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
If you need to see an action movie, and you can only choose one this month, GET TO THE SCORPION KING.
Finally, The Rock has returned to the big screen! After a bit part in The Mummy Returns, The Rock returns as The Scorpion King, Mathias, Acadian assassin, hired to kill a sorceress, betrayed by those who hire him, and then seeking vengeance.
I have found that films which seek vengeance are generally the best action films. The Scorpion King does not fail. Conan sought vengeance about 20 yrs ago, now, Mathias seeks vengeance, and a HOT and I do mean HOT, SMOKING partner/sorceress which Arnold never had in Conan.
Quick story:
The Rock plays Mathias, the final three of the remaining Acadian people, trained as assassins in all ways to kill. He is hired to kill a sorceress, who has visions, enabling an oppressive king to take over more land and kill the people who inhabit them. The people who hire him are a small band of tribes allied to end this king's oppression. Mathias ends up being double crossed and saved by the sorceress, only to find himself next to alone in his quest for vengeance.
The Scorpion King was first introduced in "The Mummy Returns" he was played by WWF's The Rock, and was a bad guy. Here, he is certainly a good guy. This film makes him out to be such a good guy, that it will amaze me to see a sequel made which shows him turn to the so called "dark side".
But anyway, what's great about this film?
From the start of the movie until the end there is nothing but ACTION ACTION ACTION. OK, so there is maybe a 5 minute lull between people getting hacked up, stabbed or shot with an arrow, I can excuse that. Dialog has got to fit in somewhere. Action movie, with a plot even, impressive!
The dialog
OK, so I thought, oh man, this film has got to go downhill when the star's first line is "Boo". Good for me, I was mistaken, it only went up.
Action!
Well choreographed fight scenes. Swords, staffs, arrows, FIRE, you name it, all sorts of ancient weapons being thrown around, jabbed and poked into bad guys. A good time was had by all.
BABES!
OH MY GOD, I want a sorcerer of my very own now, and if I can't have one that has visions, I at least want the outfits she had on for a certain someone. GOOD GOD MAN! Let me tell you, if it weren't the hot little bikini like number made out of gold, it was the little sides exposed barely there dress. Oooooooo man! Can I see that in Frederick's of Hollywood? Oh please? How much? Who cares.
Oh maaan, Kelly Hu plays the virgin sorceress, and whoa, can I get a best actress nomination up in here? Or how about at least a best costume design? Now granted she doesn't have the best writing for her part, but the stage directions of "stand there and look pretty, PRETTY HOT that is" seem to work out fine. She plays the sorceress stuck serving her master, but longing to get away from his grasp and find someone who will save THE PEOPLE. Mathias is just that person.
The Bad guys.
They are your generic power hungry bad guys, with the exception of the Tom Cruise look a like. who seems to have a big part, but dies uneventfully. Really one dimensional bad guys obsessed with one thing, but that's not a flaw. In fact, it's a good thing, you want them to die.
The Supporting Cast.
Michael Clark Duncan plays a leader of a near to wiped out tribe. He initially is a distrusting, resentfully ally of Mathias, but gradually comes around when Mathias proves himself to him. From there, he plays a much bigger role in the film.
The Love Story.
It's not much of a love story, with very little chemistry developed, but it works in this non stop action film. Mathias and the sorceress he's supposed to kill end up falling for each other. With a body like she's got, it's not hard to see why.
Does this film fit with the two others in "The Mummy" Series?
Not exactly, but with another film it could be worked into it with ease.
Comic Relief.
A Horse thief accompanies Mathias around in the movie, and he has some funny moments, but the funniest part in the film is stolen by a little boy making a wish at a wishing well in Ghomorrah.
Nudity-
None, What a shame!! and so much potential.
