Peter Pan is my hero. If I were single, he would be a strong contender for my affection. He’s fun, mischievous, silly, brave and strong. He knows all the girls want him and he loves them all. He fights with honor for what he believes and never betrays those close to him.
In the new Disney adventure, "Return to Neverland", Peter Pan is the same fun-loving boy who never wants to grow up. He still lives in his hide-out with the Lost Boys; is still adored by Tinker Bell and the beautiful Mermaids; and is still the object of Captain Hook’s frustration. Despite a different voice and a change in appearance, Peter Pan continues to capture hearts with his magical wonder.
The story begins with war in England. Wendy has grown up and started a family of her own. Wendy loves filling her children with the same Peter Pan stories that lit her with hope and faith as a child. To her son Danny, the stories are enthralling. Her daughter Jane, bombarded by the harsh reality of war, wants nothing to do with stories of "childish nonsense".
When captured by the conniving Captain Hook and taken to Neverland, Jane reluctantly faces that seeing is believing. The world of Neverland, and all it's inhabitants, is real. Captain Hook remains miserably funny and determined to ruin Peter Pan once and for all. His frenzied pranks and desperate attempts to stay away from a huge sea creature are hysterical. Mr. Smee’s bumbling ways and eagerness to please Captain Hook add to the charm.
Unfortunately, this movie lacks the purity of heart and innocence found in the original classic. The emotional direction of this movie attempts to build sympathy for Jane, yet I found myself doting on Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. Scenes without Peter Pan tend to drag and the music does not compare to the original.
"Return to Neverland" is rich with color and impressive animation. The characters are expressive and alive with realistic features. The emotional depth of this movie balances well with hearty laughs and silly antics. And although the movie is lacking a bit of magic the original left behind, I still left the movie feeling a small rush of childhood fantasy and awe. With a little faith, hope and pixie dust, anything can happen.
