For the last several weeks my daughter has been asking me "is it the 15th yet?" I kept explaining to her that Valentines Day is the 14th, and finally she said "ya, I know. But Peter Pan is in theatres on the 15th, can we go see it?" I thought she was looking forward to her Valentines Day party at school, but really her love was for Peter Pan.
Return To Neverland is the sequel to Disney's very popular animated movie Peter Pan. You may remember Wendy from Peter Pan. In Return to Neverland Wendy is all grown up with children of her own. She tells them stories of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and the Lost Boys.
Wendy has 2 children now. A daughter Jane, who is very grown up for her age and doesn't believe her mother's tales of Peter Pan. She also has a son Danny. Danny is just a toddler and he does believe in Peter Pan. In fact he gets rather upset with Jane says it is all just "stories".
The children's father is out fighting the war and is gone for quite some time. Wendy, Jane, and Danny have a rather heated discussion about Peter Pan and Jane runs off to her room. There she falls asleep only to be awoken by Captain Hook who kidnaps her and takes her to Neverland, thinking that she is Wendy.
Captain Hook is up to his old tricks, trying to get the lost treasure and Peter Pan. Throughout the movie Captain Hook tries to get Peter Pan, through Jane. Jane of course keeps fighting the fact that Peter is real and that Tinkerbell is real. Jane needs to believe in Tinkerbell or Tink's light will go out.
Of course, with all Disney movies good prevails over evil and there is a happy ending. Let's leave it at that, you've got a pretty good idea of what the movie is about.
The animation in Return To Neverland is typical Disney animation. The colors are vibrant, the movie flows nicely, and the characters are fun. It's your usual Disney animation, nothing special.
Return To Neverland moves along nicely. There are no lulls or slow spots. In fact, when the movie was over (about 1 hour and 20 minutes) I was shocked, it felt like we had just sat down. Then again, this really is the perfect length for children of this age.
So, will the kids like it? You betcha! My daughters are 3 and 5 and they both liked it. They laughed and my 3 year old cheered "YEAH PETER PAN!". This was only the second time I have taken the 3 year old to the theater, the first was for Monsters, Inc. She did great.
There are a couple of things about the movie that you should know before taking your small children. Jane and Danny's father goes off to fight the war that is going on, and the family is apart for quite some time. There are bomb raids, bombs going off, and Wendy, Jane and Danny hide in the bomb shelter. Jane is 12 years old and is out with the bomb sirens going off by herself. My daughter had lots of questions about this.
There is also your typical Peter Pan violence. Peter, Hook and the gang fight and that sort of thing. It can also be a little frightening when Hook kidnaps Jane. If you think your children might be scared by this, seriously consider waiting to see this movie.
All in all we enjoyed Return To Neverland it was a nice way to spend the day off.
