Sorry about the sucks but I figure that has to be some sort of record for using the word sucks. And indeed this movie well defiantly sucks. Today I decided to watch something different before I started burning holes in my Kiki's Delivery Service DVD and decided to dust off this. I bought this a couple of months ago when the gift certificate I got this from a Christmas gift certificate that was about to expire and they had this at dirt-cheap price. Now I was a bit suspicious to see it that low (even though it was used), and even more suspicious when Disney decided to discontinue it only after a couple of months after being released. But the original Peter Pan was quite good and if Speilberg could make a good live action sequel, surly Disney couldnt screw an animated sequel up that bad. I popped it in and after watching it once I imeadley shelved it. I watched today because I decided I was in a different mood and has been several months sometimes movie do get better after having time to digest them (it worked withPrincess Mononoke)). After watching it today I still say it sucks.
Story.
It is in the middle of World War 2 and Wendy now has a daughter and a son. (now doing the math since Peter Pan was in 1902 and World War 2 happen in the 40's wouldnt that have made Wendy a grandmother). Because of the war and all that has happen in her life Wendy's daughter Jane does not believe in her mothers fairy tales about Peter Pan has grown up rather cynical. The darling family lives change even more when they get an order that all children will move to countryside because of the war. Jane spends the last night in her room before leaving when she gets kidnapped by Captain Hook and taken to never land by him. Where she gets rescued by Peter Pan and the movie goes down into a bottomless abyss. Has Peter and the lost boys have to deal with Jane and her apparently lethal for Tinkerbell attitude she posses. I could be nice and tell you the rest of the story just so you wouldnt have to watch this movie but then I get a bunch of comments saying how I ruined the movie etc, besides I have a sadistic side to (wha ha ha ha).
the movie has big time problems though, the biggest is Jane. She's not likable and has the main heroine this is a major drag. While it is understandable why she is like that her major brateness makes me wish Peter would throw her back to Hook and tell her to Keelhaul her.
Another problem with the movie is that it focus only on Peter Pan, Jane, and Hook for the most part. Now in the original movie Peter and Wendy may have been the one with the most amount of time given to them. But they also went off to explore Jhon and Michael adventures with the lost boys. They also had Indians (Disney wisely cut them out though), Mermaids, and other sites and characters around Neverland. This time the action also only happens in the Tarzan like jungle around Peter's hideout and it just stays there rather then going around and exploring all the other locales.
And last like all Peter Pan sequels Hook of course has killed the Crock that was out to eat him. Now the giant thing out to eat him is a squid. While the squid is bigger it just doesnt hold up the threat level like the crocodile did.
Now I should be fair and saying I really did like the opening scenes of this movie. Tink fly's around and shows shadows of scenes from the 1950's classic Peter Pan. And Jane scrolling through a destroyed London with Nana 2 (the fact that they couldnt find a decent name for the dog should tell you the suck that's about to come). Disney animated these scenes has bombs fall around her and British army man marsh to protect the city, they did good and giving a film a dark look but not dark enough to really screw up the G rating. To bad that this 10 minutes of decent movie is followed by 80 minutes of suck.
Animation.
Now the animation in this movie is great, but then it's a Disney film. The characters are bright and they move around smoothly. Never Land is experience in a rich vibrant of colors of greens and blues that are rather nice to look at. They also made Captain hooks pirate ship CGI so it's 3d now, it's to bad that the Kingdom Hearts CGI hook pirate ship looked a lot better. And even with all the smooth animation and great colors pretty pictures just can't cover up the amount of suck in this movie.
Voices.
The voices are no match compared to the original. Peter Pan voice sounds like it's coming from an adult, and not a teenager like the original one was. Has for the Lost Boys and Jane there voices are ok but nothing to write home about. Then there's Smee's voice it's to high pitch and off key, that his performance sounds kind of forced. It's a shame to because Smee is still the joke teller in the movie and all of his jokes fall flat because of the poor voice over. The only one I could say I liked is that of Hook, while not has good has the original. Hook's voice did capture all of the essences that the pirate captain has.
DVD.
I should tell you a little bit about the DVD, because it to really does suck.
I wonder what Disney meant when it said Family Friendly Wide Screen. It's just fricken regular wide screen there's nothing special or family friendly about it. The video transfer is good but nothing really great either.
Has far has bonus you have another story book that is liked the one found in the original Peter Pan DVD, the only thing I got to say about this is got an urge to throw up.
There is also a game to play but unlike the fun distraction trivia game they had in Peter Pan, this one isnt even a fun distraction. This is a trial and error game where you have to find lost boys by searching the ship with out running into pirates. You also have to unlock doors and stuff like that, but since there are no clues to where pirates lay or how to unlock doors this is just a trail and error game. Guaranteed to boar anyone over 5 years old, and frustrate anybody below 5 years old. In other words this sucks.
Buried treasure deleted scenes. In this one 2 of the producers of the movie watch and give commentary on them. The first is a different intro. into which Jane meets Hook, the 2nd is Tinker bell flying around. The producers seem please with there work so nobody tell them that it sucks.
There is also a music video it's ok but it's nothing to get excited for.
Final recommendation.
I only have 2 things to say. First that this movie SUUUCCCKKKSSSS. And 2nd if I ever hear the line faith, trust, and pixie dust again I am going to throw up (uhoh I just said that out loud excuse me BAARRFF).
