goldjay's Full Review: Bear in the Big Blue House - Tidy Time With Bear
Bear in the Big Blue House is a Disney Show that both of my kids seem to enjoy. This video, Tidy Time with Bear has two episodes that have to do with working and cleaning. In addition to Bear, there are two otters, Pip and Pop, a bear cub, Ojo, a mouse, Tutter, and a lemur, Treelo.
The two episodes run back to back. Altogether, the video runs about 50 minutes. There are a ton of previews at the beginning of the tape that are quite annoying to fast forward through each time too but we put up with it because the video is so good.
The show starts off with bear telling the audience that he needs to go to work. His work as a bear is picking berries. Meanwhile, Treelo and Ojo are pretending and pick different jobs to pretend to do. He talks about the different types of work there are and sings a song "Workin' Like a Kid" about the different types of work different people can do.
Tutter is cleaning his mouse hole. He tells Bear about all the work he has to do. Bear's friend Shadow, a shadow on the wall, sings a song about working, "I've Been Working on the Railroad."
Finally, Bear gets to go berry picking. He gets back and the otters complain that they didn't get to help. They wanted to "work." Bear tells them that the things that they did do were work since they cleaned the pond, helped a bluebird fix her nest, and they cheered up a bug.
Everybody gets in the tub after a day of hard work. They sing the "Rub-a-Dub-Dub Everybody's in the Tub" song. The day ends with Bear visiting Luna, the moon, from the attic. They sing the "Good-Bye Song" together!
In the second episode, the Big Blue House is chosen to be featured as House of the Month in "Woodland House Wonderful" magazine, a magazine that feature beautiful houses to look at. Bear receives a call and the magazine editor, Ms. Vanderpreen, wants to come over that afternoon to take pictures of the house. So, Bear has to clean the house. He talks about different kinds of clean and has children talk about things that they clean.
All of the friends in the Big Blue House pitch in to help. They sing the "Clean Up the House" song while they are cleaning. And, then he sends them all out to play outside so that they don't mess up the house that they just cleaned.
When they come back inside, just before Ms. Vanderpreen is due to arrive, they are all dirty! So, Bear has everybody get into the tub to clean themselves. They sing the "Rub a Dub Dub Everybody in the Tub" song while bathing. After a quick snack, everyone brushes their teeth and sings the "Brush Brush Bree" song.
When Ms. Vanderpreen arrives to take the pictures, she asks them if they can mess things up just a little. She wants pictures of things the way they really are every day. So, after just a little bit of messing, she takes lots of pictures and the house is featured on the cover of the magazine.
With special visits from Shadow who tells a shadow story and Luna the moon, the episode is complete!
MyThoughts I like Bear in the Big House in general. These episodes, in particular are very useful because they teach kids about being clean and about working. Bear shows these things in many different ways so that, one way or another, these things make sense to the kids that re watching the show.
I like the way that Bear and the other characters all work out their problems together. They all talk to each other throughout the show. And, Bear talks to them as well as to the viewer as if he were in the same room as they are. He talks to the viewer in a pleasant manner and doesn't talk down to the kids.
Bear uses different techniques to teach the children. There are several songs that he sings in each episode and each has educational value to it. The characters in the show often have some conflict and Bear helps them solve it, thereby teaching the children something in the process. Each episode has a story told by Shadow, a puppet that is on the topic of the day in some way. Thus, it seems that everything that Bear does teaches the children in some way.
My children have always responded positively to Bear in the Big Blue House. I know that they have learned much information from this video. My daughter, at age 8, still sings the tooth brushing song and the bath tub song and my son actually hums along when I sing the bathtub song at his bath time. Additionally, my daughter will quite often remember how Bear picked up the house with the help of the other characters and will be more helpful in cleaning our house when we are all working together. I know that she learned these good values from watching this show.
Recommendations I recommend Tidy Time with Bear as it is a fun and educational video to watch. Children from toddler age through preschool enjoy and can learn from this video and will carry their learning throughout their daily life. This is a video I actually enjoy watching with my children as it is fun!!
