Good Advice (Sheen/Harmon/Richards) - take my advice and see this one.

Written: Jan 06 '09
Pros:Very cute story, lots to laugh at, great cast.
Cons:An unhealthy obsession with 'donkeys'.
The Bottom Line: This is a very cute romantic comedy. See it, and laugh.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Good Advice is a very cute romantic comedy starring Charlie Sheen, Angie Harmon, and Denise Richards.

Sheen plays Ryan, a selfish, cold-hearted stock-broker who will do pretty much anything for the almighty buck.  But when his latest scheme catches up to him, he loses his money, his job, and eventually, his girlfriend Cindy (Richards).  Cindy writes an advice column for a struggling newspaper.  Her column has a readership of about 12 people, because Cindy stinks at her job.  She's way too materialistic and selfish to dispense good advice.  So, when Cindy leaves town, and Ryan is desperate for money, he decides to secretly take over her column.  He makes excuses to Cindy's editor Page (Harmon) about Cindy suddenly having to work from home, and he starts penning the column.  Eventually he starts to really put his heart into the column and "Cindy's" popularity takes off.  And, because this is a romantic comedy, he falls for Page.

What makes this movie work so well is the cast.  Sheen is perfect in this role.  And why not?  It's pretty much the same role he's been playing all his life - well - until he grows up, towards the end of the movie, that is.  And Harmon is great as the no-nonsense editor who just can't help but sneak a peek as Ryan walks away from her.  Richards is pretty good as the self-centered material girl Cindy, but her role is a small one as she's out of town for most of the movie.

Supporting this group we have Jon Lovitz and Rosanna Arquette.  They are a married couple who light up every scene they are in.  Lovitz is Ryan's confidante, a plastic surgeon obsessed with correcting people's bodies.  And his wife is obsessed about her own body.  What a perfect pair!  But the real delight in this movie is Estelle Harris (George Costanza's mother) as Page's secretary.  She is absolutely hysterical as the 70-something know-it-all, who still thinks she's "got it" and she's not afraid to let everyone know.

Besides this terrific cast, we have a story that's just funny.  Focusing quite a bit on the advice column, itself, we have a lot of room for comedy.  Especially during the early days, before Ryan really starts to take the job seriously.  Just imagine "Charlie Harper" dispensing advice to lovelorn ladies, and you'll get the general idea.

Of course, with this type of humor you might be wondering if there's anything "offensive" in this movie.  I would say that yes, there are definitely some jokes to which some people will take offense.  After all, it's Charlie Sheen  - you can expect a fair amount of sexual humor, but nothing too bad.  This movie is rated R, and I think most adults can handle the level of humor.

On the other hand, the writers were obviously obsessed with donkeys. Of course, they don't call them 'donkeys' throughout the movie, they use the 3-letter alternative term for the donkey.   And they use it A LOT.  And in many different contexts.  They discuss its shape, its size, how it looks bending over, and pretty much anything else you can think of to talk about it.  In fact, you could make a drinking game out of it - take a shot each time the term is used and you'll be flying by the end of the movie.

Overall, this is a very cute movie, with a lot of laugh-out-loud moments.  Is it predictable?  Sure.  Five minutes in, you'll be able to guess the ultimate outcome.  But so what?  It's a lot of fun getting there.
