Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder), one of the busiest serial killers in movie history has been cryogenically frozen. When a space crew pick up two frozen specimens and set about defrosting them in the year 2455, they have no idea Jason is one of them, or who he is. The other specimen is Rowan (Lexa Doig), who is responsible for having herself and Jason frozen. Its not until shes defrosted that this crew realise the danger theyve put themselves in by awakening Jason. But by then its too late. Jasons already started killing, and the technology aboard this ship means Jason is now more dangerous than hes ever been.
If youve watched the entire Friday The 13th saga in order, as I have, then youre probably going to take issue with the basic plot of Jason X. In fact, youre probably going to see this as one giant continuity error in the timeline. Of course, youd be completely right in doing so, because it just doesnt fit. However, its not designed to. This is nothing more than a stopgap, designed to give the fans something to watch while waiting for the real tenth chapter, the much anticipated Freddy vs Jason.
However, to simply look at Jason X on its own, its actually quite good. Granted, there are some things you may not understand if you havent seen the other movies in the series, but this is a tenth chapter, so thats to be expected.
Thankfully, it seems the makers of this movie know it isnt really what fans were wanting, particularly after the way Jason Goes To Hell ended. Theres enough references to the previous films here to show the fans have not been forgotten. A cheesy camping scene with pre-marital sex is particularly brilliant. Fans will be glad to see plenty of t&a on offer, even if some of it is a lot weirder than in previous chapters.
However, to me this films greatest strength was the increased cast, and genius ways Jason found to do away with them. His first victim, for instance, has her face literally frozen then shattered into a bench. This is a great indicator of what is to come, as the more recent films in the saga have been disappointingly low on the blood and gore factor in order to gain a more family friendly rating. Screw that. This is a horror saga its not for families. In Jason X, we discover someones finally recognised that. Give that person a raise!
Kane Hodder dons the hockey mask for the fourth time here, so as expected, hes got the role of Jason down. Why he was replaced in the next film is a mystery. As far as the rest of the cast goes, those who are not simply there to be killed really make themselves stand out. Lisa Ryder plays a robot whos making herself human, and Peter Mensah is a security chief who may be the only one who can stop Jason. Stellar performances all round.
Jason X is a return to form for the series, but were still left for yet more movie(s?) in the saga to see exactly how it links up with the more recent Freddy vs Jason.
