Afros, Cadillacs, and Platform Shoes, Oh My!

Pros:hilarious, good acting, great soundtrack
Cons:not for those who don't understand the meaning of the word "parody"; there's always someone.
The Bottom Line: Hey, Hollywood pulling through with a good movie...Solid!
As hilarious as last year's Zoolander, Undercover Brother is one of the best comedies I've seen this year. It is a parody to 1970s blaxploitation movies and like the Austin Powers series, to the Bond flicks. Undercover Brother, the protagonist of the film, is a smooth-talkin secret agent stylishly dressed in retro 70s-era clothing and sportin' the afro. Newly recruited to the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D, an underground organization fighting for black empowerment, Undercover Brother is out to stop the nefarious schemes of "The Man" and his cohorts, one of them named Mr. Feather (Chris Kattan), who can't seem to escape the influence of black urban culture. When "The Man" sees the growing success of black people in the country and their influence on American culture, he comes up with a plan called Operation Whitewash designed to brainwash major African-American figures into mindless followers of stereotypical white culture. Undercover Brother along with fellow B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. members Sista Girl (Aunjanue Ellis) and Conspiracy Brother (David Chapelle) get into action to try to stop "The Man"'s oppressive scheme in style. Chapelle does a great job in playing Conspiracy Brother, a paranoid Chris-Rock-voiced man who takes almost every statement as an offense to black culture and empowerment. "The Man" has a comparable force on his side too, with the aforementioned Mr. Feather and the seductive White She-Devil (Denise Richards).
The movie is full of jokes based on stereotypes of black, white people, and their relationship with each other ("The Man" uses the White She-Devil as "kryptonite for black men" and she manages to seduce Undercover Brother). It is very clear that this movie is not meant to be offensive, but rather loosens us up on the issue of race relations. It shows stereotypes for what they really are: just stereotypes, unfounded assumptions about a certain group of people. The movie is hilarious much in the same way as the acts of black comedians such as Chris Rock or the crew of Kings of Comedy are. The laughs are almost non-stop and there are very few lame or bad jokes. They slow down in certain places, but hey, it's all in the name of plot advancement.
The 70s is a decade that I wish I had the privilege to live part of my life in. The crazy clothes, the funky music, man. Well, it's all here in Undercover Brother, Eddie Griffin sports some pimpin, bad-a$$ clothes and carries himself with a style that proves that "once you've had black, you can't go back" The soundtrack throughout the movie is solid. It features the remake of the Parliament classic Give Up The Funk [Undercova Funk] by Snoop Dogg.
I think most hilarious scene of the movie has to be when Undercover Brother and Sista Girl are fighting two of "The Man"'s henchmen and White She-Devil respectively. Sista Girl and White She-Devil start clawing off each others' clothes in cat-fight fashion. As their clothes start coming off, Undercover Brother and his male opponents stop fighting to stare. When the female fight winds its way to a shower, the guys pull up chairs to watch. As the ladies fight with the shower on, the guys fantasize that they are seductively posing in their wet clothes. They bust out with popcorn and condoms. Eddie Griffin's facial expression as he wolfs down his popcorn while keeping both his eyes glued to the two beautiful ladies is classic and definitely makes the movie worth the ticket price.
So get ready to get your groove on and feel the funk. See Undercover Brother and get your laugh on.
Rated PG-13: Besides being politically incorrect, I think they let a f-word slip through. I think PG-13 movies are allowed only one of them; two and it's slapped with a R label. Kind of silly if you ask me.
