Cons: Stupid, not scary, doesn't make sense, whole plot, predictable, dumb direction style
The Bottom Line: I got to buy this movie new for $3.99 canadian, so it was worth it to finish off the series, but the film was horrible. I don't suggest it.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
The Halloween movies are my favourite horror movie series. The first one was incredible. The second and third were also really good. In fact, the only Halloween film I really disliked before I saw Halloween Resurrection was Halloween 5. Michael Meyers always scared me. Hes usually the scariest horror movie villain and probably my second favourite, just a little bit behind Freddy Krueger. Unfortunately, Halloween Resurrection is the worst in the Halloween series and is pretty bad.
The movie starts off in a mental institution. Laurie Strode is inside. In case you do not know who Laurie Strode is, she is the sister of Michael Meyers, who is a serial killer. He constantly tries to kill her, for no apparent reason. Anyways, if youve seen Halloween H2O, the previous Halloween film, youll know that at the end Laurie Strode decapitated Michael Meyers. But in Halloween Resurrection, we learn that Michael Meyers had secretly switched clothes with a security guard and Laurie had decapitated an innocent security guard, while Michael had gotten away. So now shes in a mental institution. Soon Michael enters the institution, ready to kill Laurie. He slices up a few guards and then makes his way up to Lauries room, where after a series of events; the two of them end up on the roof of the building. Laurie manages to catch Michael in some sort of trap that leaves him hanging from a rope over the edge of the building. Laurie decides to make sure its actually Michael before she lets him fall to his death, so she tries to approach him and take his mask off. Michael grabs her, stabs her and throws her off the building.
Now the real story begins, since that first part didnt really have anything to do with anything. Sarah is a young college student. After class one day, her friends, Jim and Rudy, inform her that they have all gotten into a reality TV. show airing on an internet site called Dangertainment. They have to stay inside Michael Meyers home and investigate. Sarah is reluctant at first, but then decides to go. She meets up with the producer of the show, named Freddie, who reassures her that its a goods idea. She informs her online boyfriend, Deckard, that shes doing it and that she hopes he watches.
Soon Sarah, Rudy, and Jim join 3 other people inside Michaels home. They all have cameras hooked up to their ear to show what theyre seeing and people can watch on the internet. Soon enough, Michael Meyers shows up, slowly picking off the teens one by one. Everyone watching on the internet thinks that the whole thing is set up and that the murders are all part of the show, but Deckard doesnt. He starts sending Sarah instant messages telling her where Michael is while she tries to escape from the house.
This movie is pretty bad. The worst thing about it is that it doesnt make any sense. The beginning is the dumbest thing ever. The whole thing about Laurie decapitating another man doesnt make any sense at all. If youve seen Halloween H20, youll know that right before she decapitates Michael, he attacks her. So if it wasnt really Michael, why the hell did he attack Laurie? And the movie says he didnt tell Laurie he wasnt Michael because Michael had crushed his throat and he couldnt speak. So why the hell didnt he just take the Michael mask off? It doesnt make sense. That whole opening sequence p!$$es me off. And why would Laurie try double checking if it was Michael? The guy just came at you with a butcher knife, nearly killing you. Not only does the opening not make too much sense, the whole movie starts to make little sense. The whole reality show in Michaels house was stupid. For one, how the hell did they get the rights to film in the house? Plus, why were all the doors leading out locked. Michael couldnt have locked them from the outside, and even if the producer, Freddie, locked it from the outside so none of them would leave, he couldve unlocked it. He was in the house for most of the time. Also, Freddie dressing up as Michael to scare the contestants was dumb. I think that the minute he grabbed someone dressed like Michael, theyd either punch him the face or stab him. So the movie made little sense.
The plot is also dumb. I hate reality TV. Why do they have to make a movie based around it? Other than Halloween 6, this movie had the worst plot out of the series. This is 50% because it doesnt make sense, 25% because its based on reality TV and 25% because Jamie Lee Curtis, whos advertised as the lead character in the film, is killed in the first 10 minutes. Its false advertisement and doesnt make any sense at all. Why is Michael killing all these other people? For all the previous films he was just trying to kill his remaining family members. So anyways, the plot is pretty bad.
Halloween Resurrection isnt very scary either. Id have to say its the least scary out of the whole series. First of all, everythings very predictable. There are no surprises any more. You see everything coming. When a guard hears his friend scream in the next room over, then enters and sees the washing machine on, you know either him, or a portion of him, is going to be in the washing machine. When Deckard instant messages Sarah that Michaels in the house, you know Michael is going to be right behind her. Everything is so predictable. (SPOILER) There was one surprise in the movie though. When Freddie, who was stabbed repeatedly, somehow didnt die, and then runs in at the end and saves Sarah. (SPOILER OVER) It didnt make sense, but I didnt see it coming at least. Not only is the movie predictable, its damn stupid. Freddie having a kung fu fight with Michael was so damn stupid, it was funny. There were some other pretty dumb things too, but that was the dumbest. This time, Michael himself is also less scary. He lacks creativity he had in the previous films. This time everyone gets stabbed with a knife. In the previous films, Michael would at least sometimes stab someone with an instrument of some sort or some other object. It gets boring watching him kill people the same damn way over and over again. This time, hes also become more of a sissy. A scene where Freddie, mistaking Michael for stage crew, yells at Michael, youd only expect Michael to stab Freddie. For some odd reason, Michael just stands there and walks away. Thats not scary. Thats dumb. The Michael we all know and love would stab Freddie and tear him to pieces. Anyways, Halloween Resurrection isnt very scary at all.
The direction style started to p!$$ me off halfway through, when they entered the Meyers household. The director would constantly show scenes through the view of the camera hooked up to the people in the house, showing the scenes from their point of view. While this is a unique and interesting choice, it doesnt work out. Since the cameras are supposed to be cheap cameras as big as your index finger, which means the picture quality from the cameras sucks. This means that we constantly get a fuzzy, shaky point of view shots.
Otherwise, acting was o.k. Jamie Lee Curtis was good for the short amount of time she was in it. Tyra Banks, who was also in it for very little, was atrocious. She was not convincing or realistic and was just cast in this movie since shes well known. Surprisingly, Busta Rhymes was good as Freddie. He was kind of annoying, but good and realistic, acting out his character well. All the teen actors were o.k., they were all playing generic, stereotypical, horror movie teens, but they all acted out that role very well.
Special effects were the best aspect of the movie. Unlike many other of the Halloween films, this one showed many knifes puncturing flesh. It all looked real. The fire looked real too. There werent too many big special effects needed.
(WARNING! THIS WHOLE PARAGRAPH IS A SPOILER) I also didnt like the ending very much. We get to see that Michael still lives, setting us up for yet another Halloween sequel. I just dont get what theyre going to do in the next sequel. It seems as if Halloween Resurrection ended the series. He killed the last remaining member of his family and they burned his house down, so theres nothing they can really do for the next film without making it suck.
Overall, Halloween Resurrection was bad. Besides some good acting and special effects, it was horrible. This is the worst Halloween film by far.
