jiastar's Full Review: Angelina Ballerina - Rose Fairy Princess
Angelina Ballerina was originally published in 1983. Written by Katharine Holabird and illustrated by Helen Craig it is sweet and quaint, and yet something any little dancer can relate to.
Angelina is a young mouse and all she wants in life is to grow up to be a ballerina. She loves to dance .... more than anything. She would rather dance than play ... than go to school ... than do her chores. In fact she loves dancing so much that she even dances in her dreams.
Her parents are at a loss of what to do. It's not that there is anything wrong with Angelina's love of dance, it's just that it's interfering with her, and everybody else's, everyday life. But, then they decide to give Angelina the gift of actual ballet lessons.
And, like magic, Angelina finds out that she can work hard at the thing she loves without ignoring the rest of her life. She goes to school, and plays, and does her chores, and works very very hard at Miss Lilly's dance school.
Years later she realizes her dream and becomes a real ballerina.
What I like about this book:
-- colorful drawing full of small details
-- simple language, perfect for beginning readers
-- 18 pages of text, each with just a few sentences, quick enough to hold even a very short attention span
-- the lesson that dreams are achieved through HARD work
-- the lesson that children need to learn, and play, and help around the house
All in all this a sweet story for any young girl. But it is especially wonderful for the budding dancer in your life.
