Pros: Humorous, good story line, suspenseful, good casting, good movie length
Cons: Plot holes that Star Trek fans catch, copied plot of Star Trek II
The Bottom Line: Non Star Trek fans will love it more than Star Trek fans. It is an action packed, humorous, and charismatic movie with Star Trek plot holes that will disappoint fans.
Nemesis was a very good movie over all. It had a great humorous element that ran throughout the entire movie. As usual with this cast, the chemistry was perfect. The directing and writing were both excellent. It was suspenseful, had some romance, and was mired with political intrigue. The problem was, the plot was also excellent the first time we saw the movie.
The plot of Nemesis somewhat parallels the plot of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. In Star Trek II, the ambitious Khan is obsessed with killing Kirk. In Nemesis, Picard's clone is obsessed with meeting Picard and learning about Picard. Khan and Picard's clone exhibit a lot of the same character traits- arrogance, ambition, the willingness to fight until the end.
In Star Trek II, then Enterprise faced complete destruction by the Genesis weapon, an energy signature Kirk's son recognizes. In Nemesis, it's Geordi who recognizes the energy signature, and it's thermion radiation instead of the Genesis project, but the two weapons seem to work in quite the same way and take a similar amount of time to arm themselves.
Star Trek II featured an amazing ship battle scene where the ships couldn't see each other because they were in a nebula. Well, Nemesis also features a battle inside a nebula, with a cloaked ship, with a couple of Romulan Warbirds thrown into the mix. Don't get me wrong, this battle scene is amazing. You can taste the suspense. The plot turns are great, and you feel the crew's frustration at not being able to locate the Remun ship. But the scene is also a little familiar.
Remember how Spock died in Star Trek II saving the ship from radiation? Data (also a logical person) died in exactly the same way. Would Data agree that the good of the many outweight the good of the few- or the one? The best part- earlier in the movie Data transferred his memories to his new brother. Also sound familiar? Yes, that happens in Star Trek II also.
There are also plot holes that Star Trek fans would easily see. For instance, at one point Picard mentions that he and his clone have the same heart, which isn't true because Picard got an artificial heart while at Starfleet Academy. The audience sees a picture of Picard at the Academy, except he's bald. In on TNG episode, we went back in time to when he was at the Academy, and he had a full head of hair then. Ok, so let's say we pretend he shaved his head for a bet, it's still not the last plot hole. See if you can find them all yourself!
I recommend this movie to Star Trek fans because you have to see it anyway, but I especially recommend it to non Star Trek fans who might be interesting in some great action, a great plot (and easy to understand for the most part), charismatic acting, and a bit of humor.
Nemesis is, in my opinion, better than every other TNG movie made so far with the exception of First Contact, which was a truly excellent film. Nemesis has a lot of the same humorous qualities that made First Contact such a great movie, though.
If you enjoy Nemesis, you will probably also enjoy Fist Contact, and you are sure to enjoy The Wrath of Khan. You might also want to check out Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country or Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. All of these movies have good battle and fight scenes, and some have the same political intrigue that ran through Nemesis.
I saw this movie on opening night, December 13, at the 9:40 show. The theater was not all Star Trek fans like I expected it to be. I really think this movie was made to appeal to a more general audience. With the battles in Nemesis, make an effort to check it out now, on the big screen.
