Plot Details: This opinion reveals everything about the movie's plot.
This release by Gorillaz is a collection of videos and assorted cartoonz by my favorite animated band.
My favorite animated band used to be Josie and the PussiCats, but ever since hearing their clever catchy hit Clint Eastwood, I've been hooked on Gorillaz I ain't happy, I'm feelin glad, I got sunshine in a bag, I'm useless but not for logn, the future is coming on. Let us explore the brain child of Blur front man David Albarn and comic book writer Jamie Hewlett.
The Menu
To watch the assorted offerings on this strange DVD, you have to go through the bizarre menu. The band appears on a bar together with a roll of toilet paper, a ticket stub and a computer. Each icon brings you to a strange room with another selection to make. The videos and cartoons are NOT grouped together, you have to explore each "room" to find all the videos. At least the videos are easy to find in each room, all you have to do is click on the small static filled television set. Below each of the icons are listed with what you will find in the room that the icon brings you to.
Noodle The 10 year old Japanese Girl guitar player of the band has the first icon. In her room we find a video for Tomorrow comes Today and a cartoon called Sudden Death. The cartoon was silly, but the video was cool, the song is my second favorite from Gorillaz first self titled album.
Murdoc The Bass Player who embodies the British punk movement has his room next. A laptop icon leads us to a photo album of the band. Another icon leads us to a storyboard for Clint Eastwood, and the TV leads us to the video for the same. Finally someone let me out of my cage Now, time for me is nothing cos I'm counting no age Now I couldn't be there Now you shouldn't be scared I'm good at repairs And I'm under each snare Intangible Bet you didn't think so I command you to Panoramic view A hammer icon leads to a strange short cartoon about cooking an eel.
2-D The blue haired guitar player's keyboard studio is next. A throne dedicated to the Dalai Lama leads to a brief protest video for "Free Tibet". In it 2-D appears to be actually sitting with regular people in a sit in for the soveriegn rights of Tibet. An easy chair gives us a brief talk from 2-D. A video tape leads to another video storyboard, and the TV leads us to the wholly rendered video for 19-2000 There's a monkey in the jungle Watching a vapour trail Caught up in the conflict Between his brain and his tail .
Russel The band's huge gorilla size drummer is the last band icon to explore. It leads to his room. Inside we find another cartoon, and story boards, renditions and a final video for Rock the House. Again, it's all quite imaginative. I know you like that You wanna try that It's like a flashback So shake your a** crack I got the balls to Rock the salsa Funk the blues-a Any groove to Make you move cos Taking you to Another landscape It's my mandate I love the happy trumpets in this song!
Toilet Paper This brings us to the bathroom and we can choose from the TV stuck in the toilet or the band's action figures standing by the sink. Choosing the TV gives us the video for 5/4 Magic for me Magic make no sound It good for me It good for me underground. Choosing the action figures reveals a short cartoon showing that the action figures are like little voodoo dolls.
Concert Ticket We get a couple concert videos of the band (yeah for real, they look just like their animated selves) performing two versions of Clint Eastwood. There is also a lenghthy set of interviews about the creation of the band which has to be seen to be believed. Although much of the "interview" segment is on the mocumentary side, it does give some insights into the bands creators.
Computer The computer icon brings us to a room full of computer monitors, three of which bring us some cool stuff. One has a computer voice telling us about Kong studios and the decor of each of the band member's rooms.
Sound
The video is available in stereo or 5.1 Dolby Digital. All the videos are in surround sound, and they use it effectively.
Summary
It was a rather interesting set of videos. I would have preferred a more straight forward organization of material, you cannot, for example, just watch all of the bands videos in a row. Nevertheless, the videos are creative and fun. Little hidden things appear if you look or wait long enough as well, but I will leave it to you to find. Overall I give the DVD three stars. I think fans of Gorillaz will enjoy it, and find all the extras interesting, but those who just want to see the videos may be annoyed by having to hunt for the handful of videos actually presented here.
