Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Blood Crime has a pretty decent premise. But with a lackluster script, and equally dull performances, it ends up being a fairly forgettable movie.
Jonathon Schaech plays Daniel Pruitt. Elizabeth Lackey is his wife Jessica. They're a very happy couple, starting a new life away from the grime and crime of the big city. Unfortunately, their new life starts out horribly, when Jessica is brutally raped. When Daniel finds her, she is wild with shock, and he immediately rushes her to a hospital. Sadly, on the way, he nearly collides with a trucker, practically running him off the road. The trucker (Paul Glover) is naturally unhappy and confronts the couple. But when Jessica starts screaming "That's the man who did it!!!!" Daniel goes a bit crazy, beating the guy to within an inch of his life.
It's only later, when Daniel finds out three things. 1) His wife mis-identified her attacker 2) the trucker was subsequently found dead and 3) the trucker was the son of the local sheriff. Naturally, now Daniel's really in a bind. He just beat an innocent man to death. And, the sheriff, naturally, wants to find his son's murderer. On top of this, the real rapist is still out there somewhere. So Daniel's busy trying to find who really attacked his wife, while at the same time, doing whatever he can to impede the investigation into the trucker's murder.
Like I said, it's an interesting premise. It certainly raises some interesting questions. Like how far should a husband go, to avenge his wife's attacker? Especially, in this case, where the accusation was made in mere seconds, while the victim is delusional and in shock. On the other hand, what husband would merely let a guy go, after such a thing? It really is a dilemma with no good solutions.
I was certainly interested in the story, and definitely wanted to know how it would all work out. And, along the way, there are a few surprises that make this movie interesting.
However, all is not perfect. The plot has a lot of what I would call "question marks". Not necessarily plot holes, but more like "why in the world would he do that" moments. As well as several "well, that's just ridiculous" moments. Mostly they revolve around the sheriff (James Caan). Normally I like James Caan, but in this movie he was just horrible. Actually, both the actor and the character were terrible, so it's hard for me to figure out exactly which one was the bigger disappointment. The actor disappointed with his never-changing expressionless face. The man just lost his son; you'd think he's be able to display some emotion, other than raw anger. Anger he does well. But there was no sadness, no grief, nothing that looked like a man in mourning for his son. The character was annoying in both in his hot-headedness and his blatant stupidity. Daniel had no trouble at all suppressing evidence - even manufacturing evidence - right under the sheriff's nose. The whole investigation just looked very amateurish to me. Like a bunch of Keystone Cops trying to work a crime scene.
Overall, this is a below-average movie that seems to have gone straight to video. In fact, it plays as if it's a made-for-TV movie, complete with scene fade-outs where the commercials would go. Despite its interesting premise, this is a very skippable movie.
