This is a major Hollywood movie directed by Spielberg with all that entails - on the plus side it never lags and no expense is spared to make it feel like walking back into sixties America. On the other hand, it can't resist taking what is already an eye-popping glimpse at the life of a kid turned master con artist and adding some manipulative schmaltzy moments. The psychology is strictly 'paint by numbers' stuff and therefore although you can't help being fascinated and wanting to know what happens next you don't really care much about the characters (even though they are real people!). I can't help wishing that the rights had been sold to someone with a darker sensibility who would have more effectively explored the issues of identity and deception that the film raises.
P.S. I don't normally get excited by such details but the opening credits by Florence Deygas and neo-Bernard Hermann title music by Spielberg stalwart John Williams were superb.
