All right, I don't review a lot of movies, mostly because I only see a few new movies a year and no one is going to read a review of a movie that came out two years ago!
Tonight I was invited by a friend to see a free screaning of this movie. So, first off, it was better than your average film for just that reason... but trying to move beyond the bias...
I was pleased with this movie. I would not call it great... maybe a 6 of ten stars... The reason I was mostly pleased was the acting... that being that there was acting! I have never once been pleased with Leo, and he really did a nice job. I am not now, nor have I been for at least 4 years (since I built taste in film) a fan of Tom Hanks. Now, I will let the terrible accent go (though not only was it annoying, it wasn't terribly good), and with that aside I will venture to say that this is as good of a job as he did in Apollo 13 (what I think was probably his last good performance to date).
I love Mr. Walken... and although his part was short on time, it wasn't short on ability! He made this movie much better than it otherwise would have been by giving the fledgling Leo good character support.
okay, I know this is based on fact, but of corse a lot of it is Hollywood... and it left me not really knowing a few things... firstly, why his father would not "let him out" of his "mission", secondly, how he avoided the police on the airport tarmack, thirdly, why he was so interested in the girl in Louisana, and fourth why Hank's character's family left him.
All and all, for a free film this was okay. I don't think I would have paid for it in retrospect.
