I'm going to use the Boyfriend Meter on this one. I knew I would love this movie, but what about my moody, hates-to-go-to-the-movies boyfriend? Would he like it?
In a word - YES. The boy didn't even get up to go pee during the movie. He did try to distract me by... well, you get the point. But, I had been waiting on this movie a long time and there was no way I was going to be distracted.
I am a huge, and I mean HUGE fan of Sandra Bullock. That this movie had Hugh Grant in it made it that much sweeter. I have been waiting on this movie to come out at our local theater since I saw the previews during "Sweet Home Alabama". That is a long time. Almost six months. It was well worth the $6 ticket our movie theater here charges.
What happened to the good ol' days of quarter movies? I don't know and with this movie, I don't care.
The Movie
Lucy Kelson (Bullock) is a conscientious lawyer in New York living with her hippie parents amid powerhouses and environmental reapers like Wade Corporation. While trying to save a rec center near where she lives, Lucy encounters George Wade (Grant). He offers her a job in return for not tearing down the rec center and commences to make Lucy's life a living hell - all subconsciously, of course. Instead of lawyering, Lucy is relegated to figuring out which envelope to send invitations in.
All of this comes to a head when George calls Lucy out of her best friend's wedding to pick out a suit for him. She gives her two week notice. George tries to talk her out of it and calls companies, warning them not to hire Lucy. In the end, they make a deal. Lucy interviews for and trains her replacement and she can leave.
Once the person is picked out (you can guess it's a female and Lucy didn't pick her), Lucy learns she is almost as dependent on George as he is on her. A little green monster takes over in a great cat-fight scene at the end of the movie when Lucy is in the middle of her going away party.
She does end up leaving but the man comes back for her. Hummm... didn't realize that was going to happen.
My Opinion
Yes, the movie is a bit on the predictable side, but I don't think Warner Bros. marketed the movie as brand-spankin'-new and unpredictable. I think it was more comedy and romance. All romantic comedies are predictable.
Shock, shock. I say let Sandra produce more of her own films. They are a hit. I always love a Sandra movie and this one was no different. There was one thing about the movie I didn't like. I know Lucy was supposed to be the hippie-type, but why dress her in frumpy, dopey clothes that don't fit her? It drove me nuts the whole movie.
That, and trying to figure out where I have heard those songs before. Probably in a train with a bunch of throw-backs from the 60s on it.
Overall, the Boyfriend Meter really works. Mr. Mood and I have used it on several movies, but I think he actually enjoyed this one. I know I sure did.
The boyfriend says, "At least I didn't fall asleep."
