Hey Sue!

Well, you know my view of DVD extras by now - I have seen far worse than this even though I wasn't impressed by the extras on offer here!

If you go in with the right frame of mind I think you'll enjoy it. If you really just can't stand musicals though, there's probably not much hope of you liking this...

Dave

PS - thanks for the compliment! :-D

Hey there!

Fair comment, although I was surprised at how well McGregor in Moulin Rouge and Zeta Jones especially in Chicago sang - well, after all the producing anyway... let's face it, 95% of modern pop singers would have done worse... -P

Thanks for the comment!

been able to muster the required enthusiasm to see this (or Moulin Rouge). Though I didn't know it before, I think I've become a Musicals-phobe. Really good review though!

The DVD comes with the obligatory “Bonus” features – a “making of” featurette that has some interesting moments but is rather too self-congratulatory to really be entertaining

This is so frequently the case. The "extras" are all about the performers and filmmakers telling us how great the other is. It's nauseating after a while. Yet I watch them anyway. I'm clearly just a glutton for punishment ;)

I thought your comparison of CHICAGO with MOULIN ROUGE apt, but there also was the film's weakness, in that both films featured certain performers who could either not sing or not dance. And those who could dance often had their feet cut off by the framing and cutting.

A very fair review, captaind.

Hey Brian!

Wow... "completely accurate"... no-one's ever accused me of that before!!!

Hope you like Moulin Rouge... don't blame me if you don't... :-P

This was such a completely accurate review of Chicago that you've sold me on seeing Moulin Rouge. I may not like movies that balance great style against obnoxious substance... but great style with no substance at all works just fine. All Hail! (And "Razzle Dazzle" is one of the only times i've ever liked Richard Gere: at least he realizes that smarm is his strength.)

cheers,
- Brian

Sorry Carl I realise you are upset I'm not reviewing one of the children's movies you like. Just watch Thomas the Tank engine again - it'll cheer you up. (And it's considered non-PC, which can only be a good thing...)

Nicole or Renee? Hmmm... such a difficult choice...

Moulin Rouge had the advantage of Ewan McGregor (in my opinion a much better male lead than Richard Gere... sorry Richard...), with the added advantage of being set in Paris (my favourite city in the world!) and excellent support from Jim Broadbent. I think as a satire Chicago is one of the best movies I've ever seen, but I'd really have to be in the mood to watch it again, whereas Moulin Rouge would be watchable pretty much any time.

Just my thoughts, anyway...

I would agree but my wife is going to see it if I do... :-O

BTW when's your new family addition due? Is it soon?

Dave

Now that the wife's not looking... yep, I agree entirely! :-P

Giving such a high rating to such junk, tut tut tut. So, when can we expect a 5 star review of Battlefield Earth? =D

I liked Chicago much more than Moulin Rouge. At least in Chicago the music was original and the story made sense, although it was heavy into satire. Excellent review. Sheila
