Note: This is not a movie, but a set of tapes with episodes of the Dragon Ball Z show on them.

Ok, here’s the intro part:

Background: Dragon Ball Z (DBZ) is a Japanese cartoon (anime) that was created by Akira Toriyama. DBZ is a show of super-powerful beings that fight evil – most of the conflict centered around magical items called dragonballs. Dragonballs can only be created by Nameks, powerful alien beings (of which the character Piccolo is one). The idea? Collect all seven dragonballs and a dragon will appear and grant anywhere from 1-3 wishes (depending upon which set of dragonballs one is using – there are about 4 sets throughout the entire DBZ existence). The main hero of the entire series is Goku. Goku is a Saiyan – an alien race that thrives on battle (Goku is the exception) and was destroyed many years ago.

By this time (saga wise) there have been four previous sagas; The Saiyan Saga, the Namek Saga, the Captain Ginyu Saga, and the Frieza Saga. It is a very good idea to check out some of these or at least get some background information somewhere – otherwise you’re not going to know who these people are and what they’re doing.

On to the actual review.

The Garlic Jr. Saga is kind of strange. Here we find out that Garlic Jr. has returned from the Deadzone – an alternate dimension of emptiness (I guess). A long while before this point in time he was captured in the Deadzone after opening it himself at the end of the first DBZ movie; The Deadzone (as it’s known in America). Meanwhile Goku is still away from Earth and as for Vegeta, well, the prince has his own agenda of becoming just as strong as Goku somehow…

Garlic Jr. obviously has some loose ends he wants to tie up. He’s managed to become immortal (*gasp!* quite possibly the only character to ever achieve that) and is now initiating his takeover of Earth. He’s poured the evil-inducing Blackwater Mist all over the Earth. Now it’s up to Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo to stop him! But while they have to stop him and his men, they also have to save the Earth from the Blackwater Mist before a certain time or else all is lost!

Some times were stupid - like when Kami had to go pour the Sacred Water everywhere and had to do through this whole inside-the-lookout thing to do it. Yea. Lame. Sorry. Gotta watch out for pieces like those... I'd give this 3 stars except for the fact that a lot of the fight scenes were decent enough to make up for some of the "um, okay..." subplots. Krillin helped give this a 4.

Yea, I know, there’s not much happening in this one. I don’t really know if it was needed here or what, but oh well. It makes for interesting entertainment. Like I said before, this is your last chance to see Krillin be awesome before he sucks. Krillin was actually my second favorite character next to Vegeta just because he was this tenacious little guy, and even though he does have some fright issues off and on, it’s nothing compared to what he turns into – a total wuss. It’s disappointing. But that’s in the Android Saga…

Usually these sets are about $5 per tape, but if you shop around, you might be able to get it for less. And as I’ve said for all the rest; English uncut is good, Japanese uncut subtitles is better.
