If there's anything remotely positive about Boat Trip it's Roselyn Sanchez (Chasing Papi) who's basically a film of her own within this celluloid equivalent of fish wrap. And that's where it ends.
The good old days: Cuba Gooding Jr. won an Oscar for Jerry McGuire.
He went downhill from there.
Snow Dogs was bad enough but at least the dogs in that film only got computer-generated funny faces slapped onto them. The one step up in tasteless humor you'll find in Boat Trip is make-up, bare-butt pants on guys and a few bondage outfits.
The plot is your typical low-brow comedy: Jerry (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Nick (Horatio Sanz) decide to take a cruise after hearing that it's easy to score willing hot babes on those trips.
After ticking off the travel agent, they're unknowingly booked onto a gay cruise where it takes them about 5 hours to realize that there isn't a single woman anywhere amongst those thousands of cruise ship guests. They are a little slow, that's true, but can anybody be THAT slow?
The ship won't co... *oops* ... dock for 4 days and they're stud. I mean "stuck", until Nick accidentally downs a helicopter filled with the Swedish tanning team who gets pulled from their little raft onto the di... I mean, "deck" in their skimpy bikinis.
Please don't think I'm trying to be funny. That's not my idea of humor. I'm just copying the sort of humor that you'll find in this film. Of course, if giant penis ice sculptures, simulated blow jobs on a banana and Cuba Gooding Jr. finding sexual relief through a hole in the wall splashing semen onto another guy's face is your sort of funny ha-ha, you go right ahead and rent this thing when it comes out (um ... no pun intended here) September 23rd on video.
The only highlight of the film is Roselyn Sanchez who managed to make even her idiotic dialog to come out halfway bearable. Her acting was outstanding and it's a shame that it's wasted on some half-witted film like this. Her part is that of a dance instructor who signed up on the gay cruise so she won't have to be hit on by horny guys all the time. Of course, Jerry falls in love with her and for some garbled reason, pretends to be gay so he can be with her.
Last not least, Vivica J. Fox rescues a few scenes as Felicia, Jerry's ex-fiance who dumped him for a car detailer but now wants him back. She'll find him on the gay cruise, thinking he's turned or always has been gay once she sees him perform in drag on stage during one of the entertainment evenings.
This film is full of double ententes, innuendo and a lot of flaming. Of course there's the scene where Nick realizes that it's possible (gasp!) that high-powered job men can be gay. And that gay men can be cool guys to hang out with. (Another revelation) For the rest of the film he chases after the tanning team who, (for no reason other than to keep the guys watching a film about gay guys) do jumping jacks bare-breasted.
Flaming Latino drag queen Hector (Maurice Godin) with the lisp gets his 30 seconds of sob time explaining that he finally made up with his dad on his death bed and so there's hope for Nick, too, to become an understanding human being. And last not least, we have Roger Moore. The only saving grace for Roger Moore is in the final scenes of the movie where he spoofs his James Bond character. Other than that, watching Moore licking a breakfast link, offering a "bite off his sausage" and explaining that "in England we call them bangers, nyuk, nyuk" just doesn't make me roll over laughing.
Filmed in 2001 and not released in the US until 2003, one must speculate what the distributors were waiting for. Hoped the film would ripen? Most of the film was shot in Cologne, Germany and on a cruise ship in Europe. Perhaps nobody wanted to be caught in the US making this film. Or they only acted in the film to get paid for a European vacation.
Frankly, they should have seen to it that the cans of film get dumped into the ocean before they got on their planes back to the US. Then again, there's already been one Exxon Valdez, I suppose they couldn't chance that sort of pollution again.
