Cricketdad,
Thank you kindly, and this is the best I can do for those directions:
http://www.epinions.com/content_97807470212
You'll find that they are not only vague, but largely unspecific as well!

Ann,
Sachar made a cameo! I love it! Next time I see the movie, I'll have to watch for that. You're right, if he didn't like where things were going, I can't imagine he would have wanted to appear.
Now I just have to read the book. It's sitting right in front of me, begging me. I'm glad you liked the review, this is the best movie I've seen in a long time!

...there was a magical place where it never rained. The End." --Mr. Sir
Jon Voigt was HILARIOUS!
I read "Holes" after it won the Newbery Award a few years back....if you enjoyed the movie, you'll enjoy the book! I agree with your friends who told you the movie strays little from the book -- I was worried they'd mess it up, but I thought they did an excellent job!
Louis Sachar, the author, makes a cameo appearance in the film -- he's the balding guy to whom Sam tries to sell some tonic. That right there tells me he was well-pleased with how the filmmakers were handling his work.
Like Sundogg, I considered reviewing the movie but considered how many talented Epinionaters like you would be able to do a much better job than I!
Outstanding review!!

Michael J. Sincere,
Charlie is, without a doubt, the coolest.
Davis should absolutely stick with these, maybe even quit while he's ahead. This is a real gem, I don't think a sequel starring Ahnuld as Stanley would be nearly as effective.
You did forget one distraction: the child drinking 4 gallons of lemonade and needing to trip over his mother not one, but three times in order to go to the bathroom. Kids these days.
I thank you for your sincere compliment.

Tim,
Dule Hill is truly awesome. As an officially designated judge of male beauty, I can assure you that every time he says "I can fix that", female hearts melt.

Dule Hill, who has absolutely outstanding screen presence he makes you willing to follow him anywhere. I very much hope that this is the start of a successful big screen career for this talented man.
My roommate and I had this guy pegged for stardom ever since he proclaimed Marlee Matlin "a fine lookin' woman" early on in The West Wing's run. Now, whenever he comes on screen, we just matter-of-factly say, "Ain't Charlie the coolest?" and leave it at that.
Director Andrew Davis' recent filmography includes not one but two Steven Seagal movies, the well-received The Fugitive, and Ahnuld's latest comeback attempt, Collateral Damage. Maybe he should have been doing richly-themed kids' movies all this time?
Sue, despite the distractions of the parking lot, the box office, the snack counter, the ticket ripper, the gum under the seats, the dark auditorium, and the coming attractions, you've given us another fine film review. I bow down (not as low as the Bottom Line, mind you) to your analytical powers.

Dule Hill is awesome, ain't he! I love the way he sort of "underplays" the part here. And though I'm no judge of male beauty, his picture on Imdb.com is one of the finest I've seen, the smile is so down-to-Earth and sincere.

Bungaloo Shoe,
So sorry to disappoint. Having recently penned a missive on the lack of merits of underwear, I felt the need for more wholesome fare. Besides, the kid was with me.
As for the movie, ignore the trailers and see it. It's wonderfully interwoven, I can't believe a trailer could ever do it justice. My fear is that it will be passed by as just another dumb Disney kid flick. It's much better than that, I'm quite sure the adults in the audience enjoyed it as much, if not more, than the kids.

If you dig real, real deep, they're usually in there somewhere, they're just generally repugnant.
This is good, though, worth a watch.

This was terrible, as of course I was expecting a scintillating review of a pornographic film. Especially, as Doc mentioned, with your review title.
But once I got to reading the review, it almost has me convinced to go see it, non-pornographic though it may be.
Seriously though, I don't think they did a very good job of selling this film to people who have no idea what the book is about, as my wife and I watched the trailer for it twice over two weeks and both times just looked at each other and thought "what the f*ck is that? that's an actual movie?! i don't get it." Well, we didn't actually say all that, but we just gave each other that look that people who have watched too many movies together can share.
Alas, good review, though I am still a bit sore that it is not related to anything remotely sexual.

Re: I loved this movie (Reply to this comment)

Sundogg,
I admit it, I am sorely tempted by that fifth star (and may yet add it - I just saw the movie and have to let it stew a bit), because this movie is a winner, through and through. Jon Voight is a wonder - I love his hair - and I think Dule Hill is nearly spellbinding.
I don't think the flashbacks are a serious drawback either. I only included the caveat for parents bringing younger kids. My 9 year old mentioned it, so I figure maybe kids need to be a little older to follow it all if they haven't read the book.
I like the comparison to The Princess Bride - for this is another smart movie for kids. I wish they would make more of these and fewer Olsen twins videos.
I'm with you, though, I loved this movie - and wasn't really expecting to. It's one of the few that we will probably buy when it's released on DVD.
You should review it. I double dog dare ya (now you have to - it's in the official rule book) - if you review this, I will review the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Highland Park Illinois. Deal?

I loved this movie (Reply to this comment)
by sundogg99
Both my son and daughter read and loved this book, but their every attempt to summarize the plot ended with me shaking my head and wandering off in a confused haze. Family curses, stinky shoes, juvenile delinquents, Wild West desperados? Give me a break... So it was with little enthusiasm that I agreed to see the film version last weekend with my daughter.
Imagine my surprise and delight -- from the impressive opening sequences of thousands of holes dug in an otherwise featureless desert landscape, I was hooked. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I actually thought about writing a review, but knew I'd sound lame and stupid in comparison with you auteur types.
My only dispute with your review regards your rating - I'd give it 5 full stars - I seriously think Holes will evolve into a classic along the lines of The Princess Bride. It's got humor, pathos, suspense, and, as you point out, a heap of interesting and challenging messages that don't weigh the story down, but rather give it depth and nuance. I don't think the film's somewhat convoluted structure is a detraction - granted, the movie's not for 5 year olds, but that's fine... if anything, this world needs more movies targeted at middle schoolers (and their parents).
And finally, there's Jon Voigt - who would have dreamed that he could chew up the screen with his over-the-top Mr Sir? I was grinning from ear to ear every time he was on camera.
Five stars, Sue... admit it.
