Pornography! Disintegration! Bloodflowers!
Written: Sep 11 '07
Pros:Three Hours of the Cure
Cons:I wish they'd release more concerts like this of other albums!
The Bottom Line: Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers
Live
It doesn't really matter if we all Die So sings Robert Smith the melancholy tossled black hair singer of my favorite Goth band, The Cure on the first song of this incredible two DVD concert set Trilogy.
The Cure - Trilogy in short, is the bands performance of three of their albums in their entirety live in Berlin. The Cure performs Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers. The whole show was recorded in Hi Definition video and 5.1 surround sound in a two night concert at the Tempodrom in Berlin in November of 2002.
The Cure is
Robert Smith - Vocals, guitar and 6 string bass.
Simon Gallup - Bass 6 String Bass
Perry Bamonte - Guitar 6 String Bass, Keyboard
Jason Cooper - Drums Percussion
Roger O'Donnell - keyboards percussion.
The performance
The band starts off with the album Pornography which is played in its entirety. My favorite songs from this set were the opening track One Hundred Years, The Hanging Garden and A Strange Day.
The second set is the 1989 album Disintegration featuring songs like Plainsong, Pictures of You, Love Song, Lullaby and the hypnotic Fascination Street. Again, the entire album is performed here, not just the hit songs from the album. Smith's voice is full of emotion as he sings. Simon Gallups irrepressible bass fuels the moody synth sounding waves of sound that back Smith's moody lyrics.
Finally 2000's Bloodflowers was performed complete on the 2nd disc. This for me was my least favorite set, which is to say I didn't love it as much as the first two. I just didn't enjoy the album Bloodflowers as much as Pornography or Disintegration so the songs didn't resonate as well for me. An Encore set is also included with two songs from Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, the songs If Only Tonight We Could Sleep and The Kiss. These two songs were sufficiently moody to fit in with the trilogy presented.
I can't imagine any Cure fan not liking Trilogy it is a great concert album all the way around.
Video Quality
Oh yes, this is concert video done right, the show was filmed in wide screen and in high definition, so everything looks terrific. The full gloom and doom set of band is complete with fog and moody lighting. The cameras did a good job going between various members of the band, the whole stage presentation and the enthusiastic audience.
Audio Quality
The full concert effect is on this double DVD set thanks to the great Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Low bass is present, the show rocks. The sound is also crystal clear.
Summary
If you like The Cure, this is one concert DVD that they got 100% right. Audio Video both excellent, and the performance of three complete albums was outstanding. This is a five star show all the way around.
