The Italian Job was surprisingly good, I don't think it ever got enough attention. In fact, I don't even remember seeing it advertised much on TV. In any case, I'm glad my friend told me about it. I think this is probably one of Mark Wahlberg's better films, not necessarily as far as acting range, but entertainment value. While that's not really saying much I think you'll agree that the movie is enjoyable.
Plot Summary:
A group of thiefs get together to steal a bunch of gold bricks. One of the gang double crosses, "kills" everyone, and keeps the gold for himself. Survivors reunite for revenge. Cheesy romance, girl falls for guy... Good guys beat the bad guys - the end.
That's the basics. In truth, the plot is not a whole lot more complex.
Go from below. Like gophers stealing carrots, Steve, Charlie and the gang pop a little C4 to get a huge safe full of gold bricks into an Italian waterway for easy extraction. A precise hole is blow in the floor allowing the safe to fall 3 stories into the water below where Charlie and John wait to move the gold from the safe.
Jason Stratham must be a major car nut because it seems like in every movie he plays, his character is a great driver. Jason plays "Handsome Rob" a charismatic young man that can drive fast and woo women out of their uniforms.
"I'm the Napster!"
Seth Green plays a disgruntled computer whiz who claims to have invented Napster, which was swiped by his now famous college roommate. His whining is actually quite humerous.
Mos Def might be scared of dogs because of a "bad experience." But he's great with explosives!
Best Scene:
Mini Cooper fans will probably like the car chase. It's pretty good. I like how they go about getting the gold from Edward Norton's character.
Worst Scene:
When Charlie hits Steve in the restaurant or at the end when Steve is begging for his life. The helicopter scene was a little cheddar too.
What I really liked about this movie was the unique way the characters went about their theiving. It was a typical type of heist movie. It's a little more unusual, but not as unique as say - Ocean's Eleven.
Length: 110 minutes
Rated:R Starring: Edward Norton (Steve), Mark Wahlberg (Charlie Croker), Charlize Theron (Stella Bridger), Donald Sutherland (John Bridger), Mos Def (Left Ear), Jason Stratham (Handsome Rob), & Seth Green (Lyle)
Final Comments:
I'm a fan of Edward Norton. That was the main thing that prompted me to rent this movie. I really like Charlize Theron and Mos Def too. Mos Def is a tight emcee and can actually act fairly well, although I hated Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
With a little action and some humor sprinkled in The Italian Job rose above my expectations. Theron does not give her best performance but she is easy on the eyes. Trying to waste some time? This movie should do just fine.
