Today’s Interview: Crush and Gill from Finding Nemo

Written: Jun 30 '04
Pros:Everything in the ocean
Cons:Animation of the humans
The Bottom Line: Worth watching over and over

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

Host: Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Today, I’ll be talking to Crush and Gill about their latest film, Finding Nemo, although with these two I’m not expecting to be able to get much in.

Audience Laughs

For those of you who don’t know, Crush is a sea turtle who comes across Marlin, a clownfish trying to find his son Nemo, who is living in a fishtank with Gill. No mucking around then, we’ll dive straight into it. Introducing Crush and Gill!

Cheering, Applause

Host: The story revolves around a clownfish named Marlin and his son Nemo, who goes missing. So how did you meet them?

Crush: Dude, you mean Jellyman? I saved him dude. Poor dude was stung by jellyfish – that’s why we call him Jellyman dude.

Host: How did he get stung?

Crush: Trying to save Little Blue. I tell ya dude, that Jellyman’s got a heart of gold.

Gill: I think our turtle friend is leaving out a few details…

Crush: Oh, right sorry dude. See dudes, it goes like this – after Jellyman’s wife and all but one egg were eaten by a barracuda, he became a bit over protective with his one remaining son Nemo. So, dude, check this out it gets interesting here, on Nemo’s first day of school acted a bit rebellious, very determined to strike out on his own…

Gill: Determined, yeah I can vouch for that.

Host: Hang on Gill, we’ll come back to you in a minute. Carry on Crush.

Crush: Well, dude, Jellyman told me Nemo swam out to a boat on a dare and got caught by a man in a scuba mask. Ugly dude too apparently. So Jellyman gets all stressed out and takes off after the boat, but loses it. Then he meets Little Blue, who saw where the boat went. She’s got a bit of a short-term memory problem and although I know for some dudes and dudettes that’s a serious condition, but it provides a few laughs here. So together they go looking for Nemo.

Host:: Now Gill, you lived with Nemo for a while, right?

Gill: Yeah, we called him Sharkbait. After he gets caught he winds up in the fishtank I live in, at a dentists office. The dentist is going to give Sharkbait to his niece, who we call “The Fishkiller”.

Crush: “The Fishkiller”? Dude, you mean Nemo was in serious danger? Dude, that ain’t rad.

Gill: Unfortunately, it’s true. That little girl has a habit of shaking her pet fish and killing them. Sharkbait was only going to be with us for a few days.

Host: Gill, what did you mean when you said Nemo was “determined”?

Gill: I guess it came out of love for his father. See, there was more than just me and Sharkbait in the tank, and the rest of us had seen fish like Sharkbait come and go before. We knew the danger, and since we all wanted to get back to the ocean, we decided it was a good time to try and escape. That, plus Sharkbait was the only one small enough to do it.

Host: Do what?

Gill: Aah, that, I’m not going to reveal. The first time we try, Sharkbait fails. Then when he hears his Dad is looking for him, he tries again, despite all our protestations that it was too dangerous.

Host: So there’s an element of danger to the movie?

Crush: Whoa, dude, totally. Jellyman told me about the time he and Little Blue came across a group of sharks. They weren’t normal sharks either – they were usually against eating fish. However, one of them, a Great White I think it was dude, it got a whiff of blood and went crazy.

Audience gasps

Gill: His father was chased by sharks? That puts a whole new spin on calling Nemo “Sharkbait”.

Host: So it’s not an easy journey for Marlin to find Nemo?

Crush Not in the least dude. He’s really concerned about him though – you can hear it in his voice.
Host: What about Nemo? How does he handle being away from Marlin?

Gill: He’s scared. Scared of what might happen to him. He’d never admit it, of course, but we can tell. His desperation to get back too Marlin really comes through in his actions.

Host: But aside from the whole “Fishkiller” thing, wouldn’t a dentist’s office be a relatively safe place?

Gill: If you saw the dentist, you’d be scared too. Seriously, it just takes time to get used to, especially after living in the ocean your whole life. It was all Sharkbait knew. I reckon he got a little claustrophobic. Really, compared to the ocean, that dentist’s office was the pits. It looked so rough around the edges, especially the dentist himself.

Host: What’s it like in the ocean?

Crush: Oh dude it’s beautiful. Totally radical aye. Everything’s so sharp and clear. The scenery is just amazing. Once you’ve lived there you don’t want to live anywhere else.

Host: What’s the meaning of the movie?

Crush: I’d say that for parents it tells them their kids aren’t as helpless as they might think. Lift that wing a bit, let them have a bit of independence. Personally, I reckon that makes the parent / child relationship stronger.

Gill: I think it tells kinds that you have to experience the tough times to appreciate what you’ve got, and to be prepared to go through something a little rough in order to get back to normality.

Host: Is there anything either of you would like to add?

Gill: It’s a really fun experience. There’s a couple of scary parts but it’s very enjoyable.

Crush: Nothing is too hard if you’re willing to try dude. It’s a movie you can easily lose yourself in.

Host: Thank you to our guests for this morning, Finding Nemo’s Crush and Gill! Be sure to tune on next time.

Crush: Rock on dudes!
