intro-
28 days later is another masterpiece made by the rising horror director Danny Boyle, one of the main reasons he made this movie he said in an interview was to raise people's awareness of how dangerous viruses can become in the future. This movie was originally released in the United Kingdom on November 1st 2002 then it came to American theaters on June 27th 2003 with the MPPA rating system of R for strong violence, gore, language, and nudity. This was a pretty long movie running at one hour and fifty three minutes, but the time seemed to go by very fast with all of the excitement and action going on. It is a great movie that keeps your eyes on the screen whether it's a scary or a gory part of the movie. I will talk about the summary of the movie, the actors I liked the best, Comparing it to other movies, and my final overall opinion of the movie.
Plot-
The movie begins with British animal rights activists break into a science laboratory to free chimpanzees from being used for medical research. The scientists try to warn them that they are infected with a virus called rage that makes them very aggressive and very contagious, but the animal rights activists still free the chimpanzees and they infect everyone in the lab. Then 28 days later Jim (Chillian Murphy) who was a bicyclist that crashed and was in a coma for 28 day wakes up and finds everything ruined and all of the people gone from the city. Jim enters a church and finds an infected priest and other zombies he has to run away from these blood thirsty zombies and he meets other survivors named Selena(Namie Harris) and Mark(Noah Huntley) who explains to them about the spread of the virus and the panic that Britain experienced. Jim wants to go to his parent's house and when they all arrive there Jim found out his parents committed suicide then during the night two infected zombies broke in and bit Mark and right when Selena saw his mark she hacked him to death. Then in the morning they start walking again and they see a hotel with flashing lights they begin climbing up the stairs and then they have to scramble up the stairs to get inside the survivors room. When they get up to the top they meet frank (Brendan Gleeson) who kill the two zombies chasing after them. Then they meet the other survivor Marks daughter Hannah (Megan Burns), Mark tells them about their dwindling resources and Mark also shows them a prerecorded message that soldiers in Manchester who says they have the answer to the infection so they decide to go find out the truth.
They start there adventure to Manchester in Frank's cab during this trip they all bonded together by shopping and having a picnic together. When they reach the army blockade they find no one and Frank goes off by himself where he gets infected by a crow dropping an infected blood drop in his eye. Just as this happened the soldiers shot him and took the three survivors back to their fortified mansion where they found the commander of the troops Henry West (Christopher Eccleston) who tells them that they will survive and wait for the zombies to starve to death. Jim also discovers that even though their being protected Hannah and Selena were going to be use as the soldiers sexual pleasure when he discovers this he tried to get out of there with the girls but Jim was captured by the soldiers and thrown in jail with sergeant Ferrel (Stuart Mcquarrie) who disagreed with Henry West's idea. The next morning two soldiers were bringing Jim and Ferrel to be executed, but during this there were zombies fighting them and Jim escaped over the wall and he goes back to the mansion where he freed the zombie that Henry West was keeping chained up for observation and after that there were many action scenes of the Zombie and Jim killing all of the solders. Then the last remaining uninfected soldier had Selena as a hostage and when Selena saw him and thought he was infected she still didn't kill him and then they kissed passionately. Then all three of them go out to the car and Henry West shot Jim in the stomach but the infected Zombie killed him and the Three escaped in the street but when they were driving in the car Hannah hit the fence and Jim went into another coma. This time when Jim woke up from his coma 28 days later he finds himself in a farm house with Selena and Hannah and they all got saved from a Rescue plane and all the zombies all starved to death.
Overall-
Most of the actors in this movie weren't very good in my opinion; I will tell you who I think were the best actors in this movie. The first person who was a great actor in this movie was Chillian Murphy who played Jim the main character. He played Jim so well he was very serious and comedic during all of the scenes going on and his facial expressions were very entertaining to look at. Brendan Gleeson played the character frank in the movie. He was also one of the best actors he was a very convincing father figure and he seemed very kind but also firm. My favorite actor in this movie was Christopher Eccleston who played the mean dictator Henry West. He just seemed to make the movie have a lot more deadly and intensifying, and even though he gave the main characters shelter and safety but, he still remained a villain by using the women he found as sex objects for his soldiers. These were the actors that made the characters feel more important and help this movie be an even greater movie then what it would have been without these actors.
The movie that is the most similar to this movie would have to be Night of the Living Dead which was directed by George A Romero. In both of these movies they have a strong sense of claustrophobia; the characters are all confined in a small space and the zombies seem to always have the outnumbered and surrounded. They are also similar because of how the main characters are always in a small band barely surviving the zombie raids and just fighting together to survive even though they all have very different personalities and values from one another. The main things that are most different from these films are in Night of the Living Dead they are in a house and don't move around a lot, and in this movie they all travel to different places in the cities of the United Kingdom. Also the Zombies in Night of the Living Dead are really slow and the zombies are really fast, athletic, and more violent in this film. I don't like the way that George A Romero makes the zombies less violent and slower.
I think that 28 days later is a very good zombie movie that from the start intrigues you to learn more about what's really going on since he was in a coma for almost a month. Then the movie throws a lot of action and excitement at you and also a surprisingly good character development and plot. I just wish that the conspiracy in this movie was talked about more and became fully clear. I thought that this movie didn't give me a lot of the details I wanted to know such as how far did the virus spread. But that's what made this movie so fun to watch and slowly you find out little by little what was really going on, but I wish they would have revealed more details in the plot of the movie. You will have to overlook some small details to find this movie completely enjoyable like some of the bad dialog and the disappointing ending. I really felt like this movie was a breakthrough from the common zombie movies that have less developed characters that are just there to fill the dialog and have no personalities. This is a great movie that if you haven't seen it you should go out and buy it so you can have it with you to scare you while watching it again and again.
