Pros: Good effects, Deppe does the main acting for everyone.
Cons: Too long!
The Bottom Line: Deppe is the main star of this, along with the girl. Some very good lines, some great ocean shots, and some good effects. You have to listen hard.
WBDBaj's Full Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black P...
Pirates begins with a girl traveling the ocean and seeing The Black Pearl, while rescuing a boy on a piece of wood. The next scene is a ship graveyard in the ocean - with parts and pieces all around. The adventure begins when she takes a gold skeleton medallion from the boy and keeps it on her until she is grown.
The girl is beautiful, and is the governor's daughter in the Caribbean port where Deppe comes to commandeer a boat.
The problem with this movie is Deppe's voice - his leadership is questionable because you can't hear him very well.
The story goes on with the rescued boy and a British officer vying for the hand of the girl; the pirates kidnapping the girl (several times), and Deppe being made to walk the gang plank with the girl. Many chase scenes ensue, followed by multiple cross-ship cannon blasts, sinkings, and treasure visits.
The Black Pearl has been cursed, along with its crew due to the medallion's disappearance. I'm not going to give this away, as usual, but the movie DRAGS on! After two hours, the film is just winding up to the final battles. One effect of the curse brings very good effects in the movie - let's just say everyone is not made of flesh in this film.
There are some tongue-in-cheek things - like (and this is all I'm revealing), the Disney ride - when the dog is holding the jail keys and the pirates are working to get it to come over and release them. Very funny! And, some lines are cute. When on a deserted island the girl sends a big fire message and it works, Deppe says, "She's going to be hard to live with now." Very cute timing.
At any rate, it ends in a hairs breadth of disappointment. This is not a perfect film, by any means, but some of the effects are very good, and the comedy is throughout.
Not gory, although lots of fight scenes. Good job - and I hate gore!
I would wait and rent it, also for the ocean pictures and beautiful tall ships used to film.
