drdevience's Full Review: Waxwork 1 & 2 Double Feature
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
What could be better than a good ol' fashioned double feature? Especially if it's fun horror. The Waxwork 1 & 2 Double Feature DVD is awesome. Two of my faves together.. finally.
I'll do a short teaser on each movie here. If you would like to see my full review on each, I'll leave the URL for those reviews if you are reading from shopping.com or somewhere else, or just click on the name of each movie if you are reading this at Epinions.
Waxwork (1988) is the first on the DVD and started off trying to be actual horror. It's about a mysterious building that's just kinda sprouted in a well to-do neighborhood, and the eerie proprietor (David Warner) has invited a few of the local teens to come preview what he has to offer... at midnight.
The acting was a bit schlocky but only so much as to make it fun. The kids who were in it had fun in it, that's for sure. This one also has the notorious Marquie de Sade scene in it.. worth the price just for that!
Runs 97 minutes and is rated R for violence (duh. horror flick) and some sexual scenes and innuendos. Well... I'd go with about 14 and up, but I did let my daughter watch this at about 10 and she hasn't killed anyone yet so.... heh.
Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992) is the sequel to Waxork, of course, and begins exactly where the first left off. Make sit great to watch back to back. This time the kids are still dealing with old bad guys of legend who'd kinda like to come back to life, and the kids end up going through all kinds of time portals to stop them.
This one changed the main female, but the male lead is still played by Zach Galligan. This one decide to go real schlocky with it and was just a delight. They went so far as to get the one, the only, Bruce Campbell of the Evil Dead series fame to play a role. Just awesome.
This one runs 104 minutes and is rated R.. again for violence and some minor sexual content. Nothing major here. Easily 14 and up.
The only thing that could make this two DVD any better would be some special features.. unfortunately, they didn't bother to go there with it. Man, what a waste. Not the DVD, but the opportunity. This one could easily reach cult status had they put a bit of effort into it. But then, I spose Bruce Campbell had no trouble with that.. he didn't have any special features on Army of Darkness either until they brought out the Boomstick Edition. Hmmmm Still.. This one shoulda gone that extra mile. That's disappointing.
There some great lines in both movies and you'll be wavering between laughing your butt off and groaning... and yes there are a few scary moments but that's not why you get this set. You get this set if things like Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn are your cup of tea.. you will even see a few salutes to that in the second movie. If you appreciate good down home schlock at it's finest, you'll love this.
A full 5 stars for this double feature, even without special features. I won't hold you any longer as I'm sure you are dying to go check out the in-depth reviews on these two movies. You won't be sorry if you buy them together like this, that's for sure.
