One of 2003's Best

Written: Jan 08 '04 (Updated Aug 05 '04)
Pros:All.
Cons:White Stripes diss.
The Bottom Line: Pick up this awesome remake, which is one of 2003's best.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

This may sound like one of the craziest things you've ever heard, but I've become a firm believer in the possibility that Freaky Friday is one of the greatest movies of 2003- I'd say it ranks in my top five, up there with Identity and Pirates of the Caribbean. I LOVED this movie like I've loved few. When I remake my top 100 in coming months, it will definitely be way up there.

This movie was so good that in the climax, which isn't as cliche'd as it should be, I had tears in my eyes. I was very entranced by this movie, and the final speech that Jamie Lee Curtis (with Lindsay Lohan's character occupying her body) gives is just so moving, I was really about to cry.

And even before that, I was just laughing my head off through the entire movie. I at least chuckled at every single line, and when the sweeter parts came, I couldn't help but just think, "Aww" in my mind, like one of those sixteen-year old girls in my english class. Movies that can do that, to me, are just the greatest movies ever. I'm sure many of the critics who saw this film had the same emotions going through them, but after they walked out, they just thought to themselves, "Wait, this is Freaky Friday, I CAN'T give it a four-star! My reputation will be GONE!!!" And they didn't, they just gave it a handy little three, or a B/B+, and bottled all of their love for the film within. But no folks, I, the great Tom Speaker, will stand up and fight The Man, like Jack Black in the to-be-reviewed School of Rock. I will come out and say, "I LOVE FREAKY FRIDAY WITH ALL OF MY HEART!!!" And I do. Look at the top of this review and you'll those five orange stars, none empty. That's right, baby, you see it. And it ain't gonna change. I love this movie. I do plan to buy it very soon. I love it. And so did my little brother, which is crazy, because he has the most narrow taste of anyone I've ever met.

This Freaky Friday owns the original, which had the then-ugly-now-hot Jodie Foster. I found that movie to be too comical; and it didn't seem to me to have a passion and a heart for the film. I saw it about four years ago, and I just remember finding it to be really bizarre, and not thinking it was all that great of a movie. It was okay, but not great... anyway, this one ROCKS in every aspect- originally it was supposed to have the unappealing Kelly Osbourne, but then she aborted the mission, and it was switched to the very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very beautiful Lindsay Lohan. And then they picked up the hot-in-True-Lies Jamie Lee Curtis, who is starting to look kinda weird to me... but its all good.

I'm sure you all know the story to this movie just by watching the trailer and/or seeing the original ugly-Foster version. Girl and mother don't understand each other at all, and through some weird event, end up switching bodies, and go through an entire day in each other's bodies. But for me, the humor started before that- the movie was just funny right from the first shot, and it picked up even more after the body-switching. The writers for this film... are just awesome. They know how to make you laugh, cry, get that aww feeling, and what not. I'd like to see their resume; pick up some other films they've done, because this is just a funny, funny, good movie. Freaky Friday... the best.

To me, Lohan is just a star in this movie. The entire movie I was really convinced when she was either in her body, or occupied by her mom's mind. It cracked me up, how well she was able to come off as Jamie Lee Curtis. Curtis, to me, was less convincing, but I think that's only because she got less of an opportunity to prove of herself. To me, she was just a mother gone mad (which any normal person seeing her would think). And this kid Jake in the movie, who play Lindsay's crush, is phenomenal as well- you can kind of imagine the situation with what I just said, and its hilarious.

If there was one problem I had with the movie, it was a one-line diss on the White Stripes, one of the more favorable bands around today, up there with Weezer and the Mars Volta.

Character 1: What do you think of the White Stripes?
Character 2: They're horrible! Like, uh, talk bass player!

I almost cried there too, but aside from that, all was good- the fact is, the lines said there conform with many a teenager nowadays, so I suppose they weren't so bad. But it was still kinda heart-breaking...

But yeah. This movie is great, and a huge surprise. I was shocked enough to see an 89% on rottentomatoes.com, and while I did expect to like it, I did not expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. Its great for family, completely appropriate, and I expect you to become a number one fan as soon as possible.
