Before I first used the Power Yoga: Flexibility tape, I was not able to touch my toes. In fact, when I bent down, my outstretched fingers were about four inches from the ground. By the end of this routine, I was able to touch my toes.
Overview Power Yoga: Flexibility is 25-minute routine to increase your flexibility. It is part of the Gaiam yoga series, which includes A.M. yoga, P.M. yoga, Yoga for Abs, and more. There are three tapes in the "Power" series, the other two being Stamina, and Strength.
Rodney Yee, a young man in excellent shape is the host of the "Power" series. He performs this routine in Joshua National park, a desert setting with cacti and unusual vegetation.
Difficulty Level
The front of this box claims that it is "for beginners," but I definitely would not recommend this tape to a complete novice. Some of the moves can be difficult, if you are not in shape and/or used to yoga. In addition, many moves are not explained, as Rodney quickly takes you through the moves.
Before you use this tape, you should know how to do the following yoga poses: cobra, upward dog, downward dog, triangle pose.
There are other poses used in the routine, but you are either guided through them, or they are possible to follow when watching Rodney Yee do the poses.
If you are not familiar with the poses, I suggest either the A.M./P.M. series, or Yoga for Dummies, both of which do more to explain the poses.
The Routine
This yoga routine includes sun salutations and forward bends. It also includes some moves to help open your hip flexors, and various seated bends.
The routine is meant for people who are in shape, and starts with sun salutations. This is in contrast to the A.M./P.M. series, which starts with easier moves on the mat.
In addition, the routine moves directly from Cobra (or upward dog) to downward dog, which some people find difficult.
The Power: Flexibility routine ends with a few restorative stretches and relaxation poses.
Benefits I Experienced
As I mentioned before, the very first time I used this tape I was able to touch my toes for the first time. The first times I used the tape, I would still be able to touch my toes for a few hours, but over a few days would return to my usual gap of four inches from my toes.
However, I have found that by periodically repeating this routine, especially when rotating with other programs that include flexibility moves, I have been able to permanently increase my flexibility. Every time I use this tape, I find that my flexibility increases further.
What's really amazing to me is that I do not feel like I'm pushing myself or stretching extra hard during the routine... it is the specific series of moves which painlessly increase my flexibility.
