If you are looking for an action-packed flick, spend your money somewhere else.
The movie opens with Kate Beckinsale (who plays Selene, the main character) crouched down on a balcony, overlooking the city. She begins narrating, in a very subdued, calm dimeaner, attempting to build the drama and suspense ahead; that is not there.
You are then introduced to two "men", stalking a local doctor through the city subway. All of the sudden, shots fire, shrieks ring, and people flee; What is going on here? You follow the "men" (soon to find out they are Lycans, a breed of werewolf.) through the dark corridors of the tunnels, through the eyes of Selene. Oh no! Selene has embarked upon the secret Lycan underworld! She must run and tell her fellow vampires! (Yawn...)
After telling Kravin, the head of the house, about her findings, he is appauled. No one believes this silly vampire, who thinks she has seen Lycans. See, they lead you to believe that ever since Lucian, the head of the Lycan species was killed, Kravin and Viktor, yet another ruler of the vampires, have been fighting the species to close to extinction. So how can Selene have stumbled across such a massive group of them? She must be lying! (Yet another yawn...)
So, now Selene is bound and determined to find out two things; how many Lycans there are, and why they were after a human. But can she find all this out on her own? Hmmm....
I don't want to give away too much of the movie, considering some of the people reading this might actually want to see this, but I must say, if you are expecting Matrix-like special effects, and Blade-like action, you will be disappointed.
There are many fight scenes in this movie, too bad they were not done very skillfully. Does anyone remember the movie Teen Wolf with Michael J. Fox?Remember the way he transformed into the werewolf? I was suddenly feeling nostalgic. There are scenes in the movie in which any person bit by a Lycan can view that Lycan's memories. Those special effects, and the way they made the memories look was impressive. But other than that, the movie was lacking a certain technical team that makes things look realistic.
The entire movie drags, and is quite confusing. This is not one that will be going in my forever-growing DVD collection.
